I just ignore them, because they never succeed for me, ever. Even when I do press it in time and the arrow turns gray like the non-single arrows that appear, I still fail. I guess the best tips I would give is move so that your right on top of the server so that you have no lag, and train your eyes so that you can react to the letter even faster. Everyone I've seen and talked to about that said that they couldn't get the single arrow, so it's just an evil that you'll have to face, and hope that you're lucky enough to not get them during a preliminary or final contest.
And of course, there's the least liked and frowned upon method, but I doubt you'll want to do that.
