Here's the picture, just to be clear.
Go to "Settings" on top-right corner of Mabination page, and click on it.
Look for General setting, you shouldn't miss it (General setting is highlighted in yellow color on the screenshot).

Now you just want rep for posting that screenshot.

I'm very uncertain about what the "legit" way to earn reputation is.

Honestly, it really does sound like you're just jealous of users with high rep.
The rep system was "abused" when negative rep was possible. You could get down repped for no reason at all and it was an outlet for users to troll others.
Positive rep however... it's hard to "troll" someone by giving them rep. That's like claiming if you hit "like" on YouTube that you're trolling whoever posted the video. What.
Sure, some users get repped just because others like them, but that's just how a reputation system works. It's like a big popularity contest. The more popular ones are going to have higher reputations. You can't blame others and punish them just because people like them more than you.
Post more funny or helpful things, make more friends. You'll get rep.
Nothing is wrong with the system. It serves its purpose.

Reputation online isn't really anything to fret over. Even if you help people in the questions sections and such, some of them may not even know that the reputation function exists under the posts. Isn't it good enough, knowing that you managed to help someone?
Some reps are just purely in their circle of friends, or because they like to share rep in a close-knit circle with each other. And besides, more rep in the community contributes to more rep for other people as well if the person with higher reputation points shares it with others, if it accumulates. Like, imagine if each rep was perhaps, 1 point or so. Does it really matter that much?
Disabling reputation for yourself really does help, if you don't want to be involved with the reputations and such.

You also can't keep repping the same person until you "spread it around" to more people so it's not like a a few friends can have a big rep orgy and get 10 bars in one night.

This is something that I have always had a hard time understanding. Rep is rep. Over the years I've used vB forums, I've collected thousands of rep. So by now, getting one rep is just a "meh" experience from me. But a lot of people who get repped by the big cheese of a forum get excited for no reason. That's where it gets weird for me. Why do they get so excited over one rep when they probably have quite a few before? I understand if it's your FIRST rep and the big cheese reps you, but your tenth or even more? Why even get excited?
What I'm trying to say is that people shouldn't really think about rep as something they need and just view it as a little side thing. Now, I understand there are some people who think rep means EVERYTHING and that if you have negative rep you think people hate you, but what about when you see people with great amounts of positive or negative rep? Do you think they're super cool or super annoying? General consensus says exactly what I said. You either think that person is one of the better members or one of the worst members. There's simply no way of changing that unless this person gets a taste of what it feels like to have super negative rep.
In conclusion, rep is just a game. You have it for fun and no benefits. If you think rep is everything, then you are just being silly. Do not get depressed over one negative rep or lack thereof. You'll get repped for being a good person eventually. Besides, no matter the rep, the person always has at least one person that enjoys them.

I forgot about that as well. That made me feel little better.
And also, thanks for your opinions, guys.

Who cares why someone reps someone else? They have their own reason, even if it's simply because they like the user. There is no "legal" way to obtain rep. You get it because someone likes you/likes what you post. There's a reason why the more popular people here have more rep.
Now, as for the "rep me" threads, yeah, those are against the rules. But they're usually closed as soon as a mod sees them.
this
I get most of my rep from **** I post that other people find funny
there is no legit way to get rep
I think it's just jealousy, no offense but that much is obvious
otherwise you wouldn't give a ****
