My mother said he had Cancer. Was that true? If so, I understand why he wanted to leave Apple. He wanted to spend the rest of his days the way he wanted. May he rest in peace.

Yep. It was due to cancer.

Given the timing, he had to have known that his time was about up when he resigned. He got everything in place and hung around long enough for his successor to earn his wings.

And then the news says he got a liver transplant in Memphis...wow I didn't even know that.

Which is all he could do with his time. I am glad he chose a good man. (from what i've seen)

Rest in peace. Amazing guy, genius, a true inspiration.
Shared one of his quotes on my Facebook just now:
"Your time is limited, so don't waste it living someone else's life. Don't be trapped by dogma — which is living with the results of other people's thinking. Don't let the noise of others' opinions drown out your own inner voice. And most important, have the courage to follow your heart and intuition. They somehow already know what you truly want to become. Everything else is secondary."
**** YES. Love everything about this quote and how much he loved what he did.
I feel very inspired today.
Thanks, Steve Jobs. Rest in peace.

He probably heard an "eep" or a "quack" when it happened though. >.>

Shame to see a Brilliant Man go.
The ipods/ipads/iphones are wonderful devices. Surprisingly easy to use and develop for compared to other phones. I wonder what will become of Apple now. They probably won't come out with good stuff like they used to. We'll see though.
The mobile platform is a growing industry. It's really catching storm. At least in the industry I'm working in it is.
@above
those are the most amusing computer death sounds I have ever heard. Why can't Windows be that awesome?

Yeah.
He was actually diagnosed over 8 years ago.
So its quite impressive that he didn't just take his billions of dollars and bailed on his job. Really dedicated guy, working right up until his expected period of "good health".

Honestly, I don't think I've been this sad over anyone else's death.
I feel the same way.
It confuses me too because, like you said I've never had the pleasure of meeting him.
I don't know why people don't like him, he's one of the the best if not the best mind of our time (with electronics and such).
As much as people hate Apple, you have to admit they have various products that sell extremely well and we have Steve Jobs to thank for that.
And if it wasn't for Steve Jobs who knows what Windows would be like, it's the competition that made the two (and possibly more) operating systems grow.
I know this sounds stupid but I should get a Mac or install a Hackintosh OS on my computer to remember him, since OS X has to be my personal favorite OS.

Ha. I've read a
blog post somewhat related to this just now. Here's a snippet from it:
We look at that story. We participate in it. And when the hero meets a cruel, heartless death, we cry.
But do we cry just for him? Or do we cry for us?
Do we cry because, far too often, when we could have been courageous in our ambitions, we settled? Do we cry because, far too often, when we could have said what we really thought, we shut up--in the hope that forces we thought more powerful than us would find another target for their wrath or frustration?
Do we cry because here was someone who not merely had dreams but bothered to do everything he could in order to experience them? While we suppress our dreams using excuses that are always at hand--it's too hard, we're not good enough, we have a family, we don't have enough money, we never finished college.

People don't like him because he was an asshole. And I'm not talking about how badly Apple has been treating other companies or its users, I mean within Apple itself. So much so that he got kicked out of Apple at one point. Of course, they later realized that they needed him badly so they got him back.
