How to rank the Blacksmith Skill: By Waui of Alexina

  [SIZE="3"]Blacksmithing [/SIZE]
  
  So you're thinking about being a Blacksmith? Great! Blacksmithing is a unique life skill that is quite a bit different from the others, let me say a few things about it.
  
  1. Blacksmithing is THE most profitable life skill in Mabinogi, but only at the higher ranks.
  
  2. Blacksmithing is THE most expensive skill in Mabinogi to train.
  
  With that being said, the path of the Blacksmith is not to be taken lightly. It is a path for those who are dedicated, patient, and also wealthy?
  
  Did I mention wealthy? Yes I did, sadly enough. There is no feasable way to start your life as a Blacksmith without a few million Gold to get you started. This is assuming, of course, that your goal is more than simply rank E or D.
  
  Also I will be writing this Guide as if your goal is rank 1. If you plan on stopping before that point, then not everything will apply.
  
  Before you Start You can't just take up Blacksmith as your first Life Skill, there are a few things that you need to do first. I will list this as well as give me explanation for them.
  
  1. Rank 1 Refine. Blacksmith's staple material is the Ingot. Rank 1 Refine is absolutely required before you consider being a Blacksmith
  
  2. 180+ Dexterity. After Rank 1 Refine you need to be able to get 180+ dex for the success rate bonus that it gives to both Refine and Weave, which brings me to #3
  
  3. Rank 1 Weave. This is not required immediately. One can easily get themselves to rank 9 Blacksmith with a much lower Weaving rank. After this point, however, you need more than a small amount of Braids and Leather Straps to rank Blacksmith, and must be able to do these things yourself.
  
  Items you will need Why is Blacksmith the single most expensive skill to train? That's right, Materials. No other life skill requires so many of such different, and mostly all expensive, Materials. You will need, as I've mentioned, much mabi Gold to do this.
  
  [SIZE="3"]INGOTS[/SIZE]
  
  Blacksmithing requires so many Ingots that you must purchase them, and a lot of them. Even if you have gotten rank 1 Refine and kept every single Ingot, you will need a whole lot more. So you must get tons of Iron Ingots, your goal should be in the thousands. I recommend buying Silver in advance if you can, but that's not required.
  
  Iron Ingots alone will safely get you to rank 9.
  
  Silver Ingots and also Copper Ingots will be required past rank 9
  
  (specific amounts will be listed later on)
  
  [SIZE="3"]LEATHERS[/SIZE]
  
  Common Leather Straps. This is the only Leather you will need to obtain rank 9. However, obtaining a few hundred of these when you need them is not usually a difficult task. Common Leather / Straps are, well, common.
  
  Fine Leather Straps. Ranks B and 9 -1 all require these. This is where higher ranked Weave starts to be needed.
  
  Finest Leather Straps. These are not required to rank until rank 7, but can be used as early as rank 9.
  
  [SIZE="3"]BRAIDS[/SIZE]
  
  You will need these for all Special Armors worth making, and you will need a lot of them. This, of course, requires high ranked Weaving skill.

  This rank requires you to make Sickles or Weeding Hoes for your regular successes, and daggers for your Great successes (hereby referred to as SS [Smashing Success]).
  
  ~40 Iron Ingots to get through this rank
  
  Rank E SHIELDS!
  
  Blacksmiths 'round the world despise this rank. There is nothing worse than trying to pitch off the dozens of Round Shields you make.
  
  ~300 Iron Ingots to get through this rank
  
  Rank D HELMETS!
  
  Spiked Cap, Curassier Helm and Bird Face Cap can all be used for regular Successes.
  
  Twin Horn Cap and Evil Dying Crown are your choices for SS.
  
  600-800 Iron Ingots
  80-120 Common Leather Straps
  
  Rank C
  
  Finishing Cursor becomes smaller this rank, allowing for better quality finishes. Don't be fooled though, you will not be getting reliable results at this rank just yet.
  
  GAUNTLETS!
  
  Ulna Protector Gloves and Arish Ashuvian Gauntlets are made for regular Successes.
  
  Plate Gauntlets for SS.
  
  1400-1800 Iron Ingots
  some Common Leather Straps if you make any Arish Gauntlets
  
  Rank B GREAVES!
  
  Finally we're making something worthwhile!
  
  Greave Boots for regular Successes.
  
  Spaika's Silver Plate Boots for SS.
  
  ~2300 Iron Ingots
  ~350 Fine Leather Straps
  ~250 Common Leather Straps
  
  Rank A ARMORS ARMORS ARMORS!
  
  For the first time, everything you make is relatively sellable. Oh happy days.
  
  Light Melka Chain Mail for regular Successes
  
  Plate Mail for SS.
  
  ~1700 Iron Ingots
  ~400 Fine Leather Straps
  ~1100 Common Leather Straps
  ~300 Braids
  
  Rank 9 ARMOR and WEAPONS!
  
  Broadswords for Weapons
  
  Light Melka Chain Mails for regular Armor Successes
  
  Valencia's Cross Line Plate Armor (Giant) or Valencia's Cross Line Plate Armor (M) for SS.
  (I recommend sticking with the Giant version for now, but you do not have to)
  
  ~4000 Iron Ingots
  ~1200 Silver Ingots
  ~300 Fine or Finest Leather Straps
  ~300 Braids
  
  Rank 8
  
  Final improvement to your finishing cursor! Congratulations on making it this far! Quality of your products should be relativele stable and high.

  Things to remeber 1. As I'm sure you can tell, Blacksmithing is not at all to be taken lightly. This is a skill that one needs to be prepared to devote the majority of their mabi-life to.
  
  2. It is always good to be buying materials in advance. A good Blacksmith will never stop buying Materials, even if they have a surplus. You will learn that a suprlus of materials never lasts.
  
  3. Be prepared to spend your entire life's savings, plus some. It is common for a Blacksmith to spend upwards of 20mil before being able to make much in return.
  
  4. At its higher ranks, there is no doubt that there is much profit to be had with Blacksmithing

  It would seem like you just look at Wiki, and then try to go through the ranks as opposed to actual experience.
  
  Also, for rank 2, you are crazy to try to make Claymores and Dustin Armors.
  
  You should just spam Vales Sword (Doesn't require Silver Ingots, which are always rising in price), and make 1000 Light Melkas with 200 rF tool finish. Fragmentation can come along to break/remake the Light Melkas as well.
  
  1000 Armor completes = 50 prof.
  200 weapon completes = 12 prof.
  800 weapon success = 40 prof.
  
  See? You can finish without having a Dustin attempt.
  Dustin attempt = 0.05 prof each. Finishing a Light Melka = 0.05 prof each.
  
  Should be pretty obvious which is better.

  For rank A, wouldn't just making light melka mail be better? You only need 250 success and 50 finishes so it'll only be around 750 ingots and 750 common leather straps.

  Also this guide was written before alchemy came out. I agree that rank 2 could be done making only melkas, however, the dustin armors are where you make back some of your money.

  Of course, you can raft Iron Ingots and Common Leathers all the way to r9. I highly suggest you do not use any fine leathers unless you HAVE to.

  I believe that Dharma/Lich blaze through r2 using that method. They were advertising for common leathers for awhile while they were blacksmithing.
  
  Rafting for Iron Ignots and having friends to form 8 party rafting for common leathers is probably the faster ways to get the materials (besides buying them)
  
  Also, selling Light Melka can easily cut even or profitable. Most of the time, the materials can be obtained in mass amounts at almost very little price. Fine/Finest Leather prices on the other hand, cost enormous amount of money, and Dustin armors may or may not sell.
  
  For higher ranks, generally, you want to avoid anything that costs silver ignots because it raises the cost of materials so much. Not to mention, it is limited compared to copper and iron ingots.
  
  Just out of curiosity, what rank blacksmith are you? Did you do the earlier ranks using fine leathers?

  you don't need great success for rB and rA, so it's better to save up your fine leathers. Also, double ring mail are easier to make at r8 for regular success and save up on braids (you probly can't do double ring amil all the rank tough becuase of the rarity of the manual, but still worth to pick them when cheap). At r2 you should either do dustin sword to sell or the r3 vales sword that doesn't need silver.

  i like the guide but, i have only 1 problem. i have done part time jobs with edern untill my blacksmithing reached rank A then i used the money from the part time jobs to get to rank 9 and now i'm rank 3 blacksmithing and still ranking it but i'll never forget the start of it all from rank novice, to rank 9 because of the part time jobs.... anyway nice guide XD i enjoyed it since now i know how to get to rank 1
