Can I find a better laptop?

This is an archive of the mabination.com forums which were active from 2010 to 2018. So I've been eyeing an Asus G71GX-RX05 for awhile and unlike my last laptop where I thought it was the best laptop for 500$ range I wanted to make sure if there's any better deals.

What I like about the Asus is that it brings a dedicated 1GB graphics, has 6 gigs and supports 2 hard drives.

But the downside of this laptop is that's it's heavy, gets too hot and brings vista.
I'm planning to install Windows 7 on the computer so that's not a problem, I'll also will be buying a laptop fan so again no problem there and I don't plan on taking the laptop everywhere I go so basically it's a desktop replacement for me.

So Nation do you know any better deals?

I would get a desktop instead and just settle for a lighter laptop for other works.

I wish I had the money for that since desktops are better than laptops when it comes to customization but even though I don't plan to bring this laptop everywhere I still plan on taking it places every once and a while.

I know around this price range I could find a desktop that's better but If I do get a desktop and a laptop (or keep the one I have now) I'll also need to buy an external hard drive so I'll all the files I want on the go and external hard drives can have corruption problems and I don't want all my files to go to waste (in case I don't backup).

Also games are another factor. I love playing games on the highest settings and most laptops around the 600$ range can barely play them on medium.

tl;dr
I don't want to have a separate computer for games/work :S

You can probably fetch a very powerful desktop for under 600 dollars.

You'd need to scrap up some used parts at a cheap store for things like monitors maybe.

My current laptop is the 3rd laptop I've purchased and at this point I've definitely decided that its best to just get a powerful desktop and a light laptop. There are just too many reasons to even begin listing why.
