Exactly how useful is it? I normally only use trans for bosses, so I rarely have to hit multiple targets.

Not useful in the slightest except for level 1 to get Petrification. And considering that Petrification only works on one target, the best it'll do is flinch some monsters, which doesn't do much since your weapon range will be big enough to hit everything around you.
