if you use the basic d->w->s->a you should win. mata will tend to use S against you.
other basic jousting strategies:
Starting moves:
using W will make you take the least damage from the counter attacks (Minimizes A and S damage)
using A will give you the highest chance against a randomer (aka newb pressing buttons), but you will take a lot of damage from S counter.
Using D you can do the most damage, but only against S (someone who thinks you are going to use A).
using S gives makes you do high damage and counters the most commonly used move (A).
middle of the battle:
look at what move your opponent has used previously, and use the move clockwise adjacent to the darkened square to induce a tie.
Ex. if the opponent used A previously you should use W. if the opponent used S previously you should use A. if the oppenent used D previously you should use S.
this way any kind of mistake made by your opponent will be a big mistake.

Actually Most people use W first I do aswell if you do S A or D to start you could begin with some bad health. W is the most safe

I usually use A first.
But W is probably safer, since you take very little damage and if you get hit, there is no key that can take advantage of the fact that you just used W. If opponent uses D, they will most likely get smacked by A.

uh yea i said that in my post. o.o
if you use A as your first move on mata you are dead.
anyways S does more damage than W (even on tie) so it's not that safe. being safe does not garantee you a win either.

What race are you? Humans get a W damage bonus after using A. Giants get some other bonus I didn't care to remember. Elves get a bonus for using the same attack as your opponent.
