I've always thought that when you see something, a book/show/movie/manga/anime/etc, and you like it, you start from the beginning. At least that's what I do. Recently, however, I've come to notice that people actually jump into the middle of something without reading/watching the beginning...
see:

So how many of you start from the beginning and how many jump in the middle without reading about what happened before?

Beginning. Only things I usually skip are shounen filler arcs.
TBH, I don't know anyone who just went and watched a Anime/ read a Manga starting in the middle of the series. I do understand if they do something like that for a super long series like the long going Shounen Jumps (One Piece, Bleach, etc) but not much reason overall to miss out on so much. You can read Manga like....a lot faster than watching the Anime, so no reason to jump to the middle, just start from the beginning.

I always start from the beginning. It'd be pretty dumb to start in the middle.
Well, I'll take that back. I did start the DW manga where the anime stopped, but after I found out all the changes, I went back and read the beginning.

That's what I don't get. Why would you start a manga/anime or even a book at the middle just because it's long? If you don't feel like reading it from the beginning that means you don't really care about it, so why bother reading it at all? I had a friend at school that had read One Piece years ago and I was trying to convince him to start reading again. What did he do? He started from chapter 600 or so. =_= He keeps going like "Why is x happening? Who is y? Why is w going on?" I'm like "*wants to punch him in the face* Just ****ing read it from the beginning, damn it!"

Oh, I understand that. I had that happen to me with something, but I can't remember what it was. Animes do tend to get differ from the mangas they are based on though. I have heard that Elfen Lied is quite different in the manga, but I haven't actually read it yet.

I always start at the very beginning. It'd me mighty confusing to just stare at the end or something and not even understand it. That way, you won't get as much as you would out of it as you would if you watched it in it's entirety.
I skim sometimes when there's these random filler parts, but I still feel like I won't have missed a thing if I still am at least reading/watching it, even if I'm putting in not much effort to watch it or read/take in info from those parts.

I start at the beginning. If I start in the middle it's because someone showed me something cool somewhere around there, but if I end up liking it, I'll go back to the beginning.
I thought about glancing at some Naruto chapters just to see what was going on, since I dropped that series long ago, but then I realized I still didn't care. If I feel the urge to glance at something at a random spot it usually means I'm already tired of it and probably won't even bother.
