High Rank Lightningbolt is better for most situation, rF Firebolt is good enough for pretty much all when needed.
Firebolt also can be a bad thing with its knockback reseting a monsters AI and sometimes taking the monster out of range, although people only really use it FOR its knockback. Lightningbolt is much better in terms of being useful.

Doesn't seem to be a very flexible combat strategy at all. It isn't efficient at all either. If you are depending you have only 5 mana (especially after waiting 30 seconds at NIGHT), then that means you lost all your mana in your mana pool beforehand. Not to mention, you used up a switch slot for such an useless strategy. Also, it kills the mana pool for mana shield unless you pot.
I didn't say to purposely drain your mana so that you could do this, or that you aren't allowed to use mana potions at all. I'm just pointing out that this is a viable method.
Lots of people I know don't bother putting anything on secondary because they don't need a back up to their dual broadswords. I myself, before Blaze, would often never switch weapon slots.
Also very few people use mana shield - especially non-mages with low int, low mp, and no ranks in the skill.
Remember to apply what's said in these responses to the person asking the question. Your character my be hybrid with melee, range, and magic ranked, but based on TS signature it's unlikely he carries a bow on his back.

as a mage that's max lightningbolt and firebolt i'd say as you already have r9 icebolt(for your fastcast) do firebolt. yes it can reset AI, yes it takes .5 secs longer to cast but it will knockback on everything but adv heavy standers, something lightning won't do. ever. interrupts ghost casting. for cc wands if you really feel so inclined i'd say go for a cc+2 wand for firebolt as it will have a -cast cost, not overkill, and still be terribly useful for ballooning. but seeing the mostly melee gig i'd imagine you'd be using it to set-up/interrupt an attack.

fire.
firebolt for me is a must as a knockback, especially for the mobs with magic pd. high fire makes killing golems really easy, and wyvern hunting is a sinch too. it comes in really handy in exploding dungeons like castle or rabbie adv as well.
and it beats defense skill, so it's great for pvp too >:D
when you get fire 1 your bolt doesnt disappear when you get hit :D

Once evade comes out, you can use it with conjuntion with a bunch of other skills including lb or ib to make ridiculous combos.
Besides, if your mainly melee, it doesn't hurt to have a tiny bit of magic in case what you're fighting is melee resistant.

I like CC firebolt because it can be spammed and kills most quickly out of all the bolts assuming you're only using it to kill the monster. I think if you plan on doing a melee+bolt combo while attacking one monster, it may not be too useful except for the knockback, for but things like resting Karu golden masked ghosts (or monsters with some mana PD + tons of HP + fast recovery), it kills even more quickly than any smasher/WMer or magnum-er. It's also extremely useful for wyvern-hunting. Just takes up so many MP potions... T_T

CC firebolt, and lots and lots of 10 mp potions.
Very simple. Very easy. You might ask who does that, but let me tell you that its far more effective than you might think, especially since 2k firebolts are very easy at rank 1. Switching from sword to wand and back isn't a horrible game plan.
I prefer lightningbolt but I suggest everyone have rank 5 firebolt for the speed range knock back.
Magnum shot is pretty much the same thing, but it never misses.
Firebolt can be a god send in solo battles against enemies who have PD (ie, golem, ghost, etc) and deals heavy damage. It WILL knock them back, and it doesn't miss.

No offense to the bolts but I feel like they're outdated. Melee rarely needs to use bolt. I find a pet ram faster than charging lb. Also, for pure combat purpose, even low rank blaze outclasses firebolt's damage crits. A non-knockback blaze at rank novice critted at about 800 for me.

uh u need a wand for blaze. you dont need a wand for bolts

Firebolt has less cooldown time than blaze, and far more range. It's a good utility move, makes killing skel squads in rabbie adv a lot cleaner.
Blaze is melee range. Blaze and firebolt belong in different niches.
r9 ib is really handy, best use of auxiliary AP ever, imo. Ice tennis, long distance aggro puller & finisher, outspeeds enemy range/magic

Lightning bolt. But if you plan on hunting wyverns a bunch CC FB.
Though FB has more usefulness in dungeon situations then LB.

I prefer firebolt for an initial attack, it takes some times, but it destroys most of an enemies HP, if not a 1ko.

Both....
Hell do ice too. All 3 are highly useful and hardly any AP to R1 not to mention stupid easy to train. With R1 CM and Windmill.. they don't do a whole lot to your CP so don't worry about that so much even. If you want a focus take one or both to R2 until MM is R6 or until you are satisfied with your MP so you aren't chugging MP pot for simple magic-counter.
Bolts are hella useful for all 3 main fighting styles. So just rank them all it wont hurt you any.
Edit:
To carry on from kitae:
I deal over 2.5k on crits with my firebolt. If i want to breeze through a dungeon fast without effort i make a crap top of MP pots and just destroy with my CC firewand. It will destroy most things in 1 shot. Until my range and melee is all R1 I somewhat rely on my high bolt ranks to speed level when nessecary.

i think lightning bolt is better cause it is faster to charge. And also deals the most damage with 1 charge so i would say lightning bolt

When you do it more than once, you will lose all mana if you didn't know. It doesn't give much flexibility at all. Without using a wand, a person can use bolt every once in awhile without having to use mana pot. rF Mana shield without high int/mana can still save you because it adds more "life" to the character. If a person ranks a bolt, it will add intelligence as well. It will help even more if person ranks Magic Mastery because they like whatever bolt they used.
There are other stuff a melee can carry on secondary besides a bow. Noone, but you, mentioned a bow. I am not sure what you have against my character, but I have said nothing about my character here. Also, it has nothing to do with this situation at all.
Sword/Blunt+Shield, dual daggers, and/or two handed type swords are other melee weapons that low level and high melee characters generally carry around. I rarely see anyone actually carry nothing on secondary. Many people (low or high) carry an ego as secondary, regardless of the levels of ego. You are clearly an exception if you carry absolutely nothing on secondary.
