i want to upgrade my 32 bit windows vista 2gb computer, but i know that it will not read anything higher than 3-3.5 gb. so i was wondering would adding 3gb of ram(2gb card and a 1gb card) cause any problems or should i just get 4gb and accept the loss.
cant upgrade to a better computer at the moment so i am tring to squeeze out everything i can from this one

as long as they're the same speeds you can. Also be sure to put them in the right slots.

The only loss you get from combining 2GB with 1GB is that only 1GB from each module will be in faster "dual channel" mode. The extra will be in single channel. But the difference in performance in practical terms isn't significant, so it doesn't matter.
On the other hand, if you combine slow and fast memory, the faster module will slow down to match the slower one. It's more recommended to pick ones of the same speed, though.
