if i leave the area / log off will they forget me??
im planning on opening up effie's secret shop but she wants things that dunbarton people sell. since i have a mule at dunby already i was going to log in and out between the 2 chars to buy / transfer / give.
also, since i dont have much inv space, is it ok if i give just a few at a time?? or will that not be enough for them to like me??

No they won't, only if you're gone for days without giving them gifts :what:

You can give a few gifts at a time provided that not too much time passes between your last gift and your next gift (I'm not sure how long it should be, but they most definitely won't forget you if you spend 5-10 minutes at least). So if you want to use housing coupons to get to dunbarton or log off to a mule/put the items on pets to transfer, you'll be perfectly fine.
However, for most secret shops, you'll need a lot of the item before they'll open up their secret shop, so it may take a long long time. I remember when I did the one for Stewart to get the scary library pass, it took me like 50 breads or something...Gordon and Neles took a ton as well.

Doesn't it take ignorance to forget? Give gifts. Get secret shop items. Ignore NPC.
Yep, the NPC will forget you if you do that.

oh yeah the little log out / transferring times i dont think made much of a difference. but i wonder why at the end of one giving she started to talk of more intimate things, and the start of my next giving it kept saying i'd better stop talking to her for a longass time. i kept giving her stuff regardless so i eventually opened it up, and didn't take too long either. :3 ty

Everytime I've tried to befriend an NPC, I spammed gift+talk options without waiting. I haven't had any problems in opening up secret shops, so all the superstitions (especially around Agnes) are bogus.
