  It might be a glitch, but fusing these three items repeatedly sometimes gives fixed recipe completions. It's not that it should matter anyway, since recipes are the first things you'd complete in any case :P

  For weapons. 2 gathering knives + paper works too. If you do that, its less trips to the NPC.

  If you don't want to do mandrakes, get mp30 and green small gems and spam those basic mana preservation stones.
  
  You'll get more exp for synthing mandrakes, but mana stones are easier to make.
  This won't get you to a rankable skill, but just spam random stuff for fails until you can rank it after.

  Actually, you rarely get a potion out of it compared to the hp30,sp30, basepot. Most of the you get random junk, and recipe fail prof at 50% of the time. I suspect that the recipe fail prof is from failing to make a product after you succeed in synthesis. (Confused yet?)

  i get a potion about 85% of the time which is good to me.
  
  And i did the hp/sp30's with base potion too and decided to try it with hp10's. Same success rate and items so its up to you what you choose.

  For rank C, I maxed the herb requirement (well, every requirement except for the potion one because I didn't know about the random potion synthesis method that time) by making mana herbs using 1 white herb, 1 bloody herb, and 1 sunlight herb. However, that can get kind of pricey because of the white herbs, so you should max out the potion requirement instead by doing random synthesis with cheap pots to get more pots. Then you'd be left with a couple herb requirements, in which you can make mandrakes (cheaper) or mana herbs (useful for making into pots and using/selling).
