[FONT=Arial]What is a Tragic Hero, you may ask? No, not the Shakespearean kind.
A Tragic Hero (a term I coined) is a melee based character who dwells in Potion Poisoning in order to strengthen themselves.
"Potion Poisoning? Isn't that a mechanism in the gameplay designed to discourage the player from abusing potions?"
Yes, but then again, they (Devcat) defeated this purpose by implementing enchants that reward the player for Potion Poisoning...
Let's get straight to the facts.
Strengths and Weaknesses of a Tragic Hero
Strengths
+The abundance of well... Strength that is awarded to the player by some enchants that activate during Potion Poisoning. The player attains maximum melee power.
+Increases Potion effectiveness, thus
+Encourages high HP and Defense
+Extends to Transformations
Weaknesses
-Low Critical because of 0 Will
-Generally weaker than Giant enchant users when outside of Potion Poisoning
-Quite expensive to acquire
-Undesirable for Archery-based Characters;
-Even more undesirable for Melee-Magic hybrid characters:
-0 Int decreases Magic balance and damage;
-Drinking MP potions while Potion Poisoned decreases STR.
-No chance to deadly; at 0 will.
Enchants for Tragic Heros
Pot Poison Enchants (All Suffixes)
* Revenger (Rank 2 Suffix) +20 STR if Potion Poisoned, +12 Max Damage, -20% Balance if Poisoned, +10% Critical if Deadly
* Dangerous (Rank 9 Sffix) +10 STR if Potion Poisoned, +5 Will if Poisoned, -5% Min Injury Rate
* Tragic (Rank A Suffix) -10 MP, +10 STR if Potion Poisoned
Dangerous is not recommended, because of its rareness and high rank, and because the extra 5 Will is negligible and requires the character to be Poisoned to take effect.
Costs
Revenger enchant scroll costs around 2mil, a Dangerous item is 1mil, and Tragic items are 100k a piece.
Supplementary Enchants
Raven [Boots] (Rank 9 Suffix) - +5-8/2-4 Max/Min Damage.
Wooden Needle [Wood Plate Canon] (Rank 8 Prefix) - +12 Max Damage if Combat Mastery r5+, +6% Critical, -20 Dex
Diamond/Victorious/Corundum (Rank B/C/B Prefixes)- All +6 Max Damage, with some sort of Luck/Will lost.
Grace [Graceful Helmet](Rank 8 Prefix) - +6/3 Min Damage, +6 Balance, -10 Will.
In order to understand the Tragic Hero, we must examine the mechanics of Potion Poisoning.
Mechanics of Potion Poisoning
Whenever you chug down a potion, it has a toxicity rating that contributes to pushing you down a Potion Poisoning stage. The toxicity rating is proportional to the amount the potion heals.
The character starts at Stage 0, and will always attempt to work their way back to this stage.
* Stage 0: No message - No effect (This is the stage that a player starts out with.)
* Stage 1: "It feels like the potion works better than before" - Any potion used is 1x to 1.2x as effective.
* Stage 2: "This potion is effective!" - Any potion used is 1.2-1.3x as effective.
* Stage 3: "This potion is clearly effective, but it feels weird somehow." - Any potion used is 1.3x to 1.5x as effective.
* Stage 4: "The potion has some side effects." - The player is afflicted with the Potion Poison status. Any potion used is 1.5x as effective.
* Stage 5: "The potion worked as it should, but it had some bad side-effects too." - Any potion used is 1.5x to 2x as effective.
* Stage 6: "Anymore of this potion is dangerous!" - Any potion used is 2x-3x as effective.
It takes around 30 HP30s for a character to go from Stage 0 to Stage 4.
Reduction in Stats
When drinking a potion while in Stage 1 or deeper, the game displays a message - different messages for each stage as indicated in between the quotation marks. In addition, some stats will also decrease. The stats is determined by the potion type while the amount is based on the potion's toxicity rating and the Stage:
HP and Wound-type potions will cause Will and Intelligence to decrease.
Stamina-type potions will cause Will to decrease.
MP-type potions will cause Strength to decrease.
Hybrid potions such as Full Recovery Potions and HP & MP 30 Potions will count towards the type healed. (i.e. The HP & MP 30 Potion would reduce the stats corresponding to both HP and MP potions.)
Stat Recovery
The stats decreased by drinking potions in Potion Poisoning will recover at a rate of 2 per minute. When ALL of the character's stats are returned to normal, then the Potion Poisoning Status will removed, if they were inflicted with it.
Negative Stats
"Although a reduced stat displays as 0, it may be in the negatives. Drinking potions during Potion Poisoning will reduce the stat until it is at -100% of its original value. The higher of a certain stat the player has, the "deeper" they can enter into the negatives, allowing them enjoy the activated bonuses of Potion Poisoning-based enchants for a longer duration." -Wiki
We can abuse this by raising our Intelligence; since it is a lot easier to raise Int than to raise Will. For example, if the player has 500 Int and 200 Will, and reduces them to the lowest they can go, then they can remain in Potion Poisoning for 500 minutes, 300 of which they enjoy full Will. But of course, this is only recommended for the endgame player who has a shotage of Combat skills to spend AP in and plans to hybridize in Magic.[/FONT]
