One of the fans on my PC case is making this odd, sort of "buzzing" noise. Though not really buzzing, like it has dust in it. I already just cleaned it, though not the best job (didn't have any compressed air on me :P).
Its still making it after I turned it back on, is it dust? Or does it need some oil applied? (if so, idk where the oil should go. In the center part of the fan?).
Haven't really dealt with fans before, so excuse the newb questions :(

is one of the blades bent?
-
Sapphireoath wrote on 2012-01-26 14:10
None of them should be, besides the fact there is no way for them to be bent. There could be a wire from the fan somehow going against the blades, but I don't see how they were moved in the way :P
If I have to, I can unplug it and remove the cage its in out of the case to get a closer look (its pretty hard to get to otherwise)

yeah I would turn it off and as it slows down get a look at the blades and surrounding wires to see if it's hitting something
there might be a bolt or screw loose (not off) on the inside that's being hit as well.

Already fixed it, guess it was just some leftover dust.

*sigh* it just did it again a few minutes ago. Didn't last long though. I have NO IDEA what it is D:
Its not a buzzing sound, nor a whirring sound. Some sort of cross between the 2. Hard to describe :P
I'll unplug the fan that I think its coming from, and see if it really is that ...

Are you sure its not one of the movin compents like the fan axel rubbing ie not lubbed
It migth just be the fan blade making bare touches with the housing

Not sure how it would even be touching anything, I have hardly moved it since I got the case (a few times, that was when I was installing everything into the case. The HDD is in the same cage as the fan). Its an off and on noise, sometimes it does it, sometimes it can go a whole day without making the noise.

Did you clean the dust inside of the wiring of the fan?
-
Sapphireoath wrote on 2012-02-01 11:18
Damnit, I just heard the noise even though that fan is unplugged...now I really have no idea what is making it.

Hannah's Lover wrote on 2012-02-01 11:34
I can't think of anything that moves that would be making that type of noise besides a fan
-

Try and stay off the computer awhile. Read a book. Keep an ear out for the noise.
Then see if it's not your imagination or your heater is making the noise. Heck, if your mom, dad, roomate or whatever might be using a blender, lol.

Starting to think the sound is coming from my HDD. I think I can describe as more of a faint rattling sound, happens randomly :P
I hope it isn't my HDD, shop I got it from isn't exactly...close (more like 2 "states" south ...@Aussies from Victoria lol)
Edit: HDD is a Western Digital Caviar Black 1TB, if that helps :P

You wouldn't return it to the shop. You'd do an Advanced RMA through Western Digital.
Usually when I hear those kinds of noises from a HDD it means the HDD is failing and I backup my data and do an Advanced RMA as soon as possible. I use Acronis TrueImage Home to clone my old failing hdd to the new one, and then I use the destruction algorithms on it to destroy the data on the old one so nobody can get my stuff.
Is it happening a lot? It may not be something serious, but if you hear "Click. Click. Click. Click." coming from it... that's called the click of death, and you need to backup and replace it ASAP. Like stop using it immediately and Advanced RMA.
Check this page, has some info on how to tell what it is:
http://pcsupport.about.com/od/nonworkingcomponent/ht/hdnoisetb.htm
There are tests, and if you get bad sectors then... well, that's a sign that your hdd is failing and you should replace asap. But the good thing about WD is, their warranties are super long and they send you the new hdd before you have to send the old one back, so you can easily clone from the old to the new.
