Yes! We want to provide the best product possible for you so we will be looking at many different options in the future.
Would the cancelled SJ series be published digitally?
Anything is possible. We will be conducting surveys to find out what you want to see. Your responses will be taken into consideration when we’re coming up with future content ideas.
Will Weekly SHONEN JUMP Alpha be available on other devices (Android-based smartphones and tablets, Nook, Kindle Fire, etc.) in the future?
We are looking into it.
Why are you launching a digital version of SHONEN JUMP?
We’ve known for a long time of the strong fan demand for the most current content from Japan, whether it’s for manga or anime. Digital is the way, and for manga, the market is finally ready to deliver it.
Why are you ending the print version?
The goal is to provide the instant gratification to fans of the most current storylines from Japan. Once they’re keeping up digitally, they’ll want to stay up to date that way. But for maintaining a permanent collection, fans will have both digital and print options in the graphic novel format.
Was the print version not performing?
While we’ve been pleased with the performance of the magazine, we saw a bigger opportunity to move SHONEN JUMP to an all-digital format, including a way to bring fans developments in their favorite stories faster.
Are you moving your entire manga business to an all-digital format?
No. Print manga (graphic novels as well as other formats) continues to be at the core of our business. Expanding our digital distribution allows us to reach readers in different ways, providing more options to access these stories.
For the retail channels that currently only stock SHONEN JUMP Magazine, will VIZ Media be in-effect ending its relationship when they no longer stock the magazine?
We still have several, quite popular physical print publications beyond SHONEN JUMP. We are continually evaluating what products will work best with each retail channel, and strive to have our manga and anime available at as wide a range of outlets as possible.
Will Weekly SHONEN JUMP Alpha still have advertising?
Yes, that’s the intention. Obviously, advertising in a digital publication entails different approaches from print, which we’re looking into.
Why is Weekly SHONEN JUMP Alpha only available for rent?
Weekly SHONEN JUMP Alpha is our introduction to the manga universe. It brings together chapters from some of the most popular comics in the world and is an ideal way to sample what you may like. The $0.99 rental format provides a very low entry barrier to getting the best of manga in one shot.
In Japan, manga magazines are considered to be short-term offerings that can be discarded as the next issue arrives.
If fans of the manga series want to maintain a permanent collection, both the digital and print options are available to them in the graphic novel format.
Will Weekly SHONEN JUMP Alpha also include columns and additional editorial (video game coverage, reviews, news etc) that the print magazine featured?
Beyond the manga “bundle†that will arrive every week, Weekly SHONEN JUMP Alpha will feature non-manga editorial content in a variety of ways online—more details to come soon.
Will users be required to have the VIZ Manga App or VIZManga.com in order to read the digital version of Weekly SHONEN JUMP Alpha?
Weekly SHONEN JUMP Alpha will be at first available through VIZManga.com (accessible from any computer or internet-enabled device) or through the free-to-download VIZ Manga App for iPad, iPhone, or iPod touch.
For those who have a current subscription to SHONEN JUMP Magazine through next year, what can they expect print-wise? Will the magazine stay the same until the digital transition is complete?
Current subscribers to SHONEN JUMP Magazine will either receive all remaining print issues of SHONEN JUMP Magazine until their subscription ends or through the April 2012 issue, whichever comes sooner. The magazine will have the same manga and articles fans have come to know & love. All current subscribers are already eligible to receive Weekly SHONEN JUMP Alpha.
What about Yu-Gi-Oh! TCG cards?
Current buyers of the print magazine from newsstands will be able to get Yu-Gi-Oh! TCG card(s) with the magazine through the April issue which streets in March 2012. Subscribers will receive Yu-Gi-Oh! TCG card(s) through the end of their subscription or through the April issue (streets in March), whichever comes sooner.
However, we are currently in discussions with Konami to continue our Yu-Gi-Oh! TCG card relationship.
Will Weekly SJ Alpha members receive any physical extras like the Yu-Gi-Oh! TCG cards?
We have some exciting things planned, so more details to come.
What is the last day for NEW subscriptions to SHONEN JUMP Magazine to be accepted, if at all?
The last date we are accepting new print subscription requests is Jan. 30, 2012. Any new subscribers will receive the print magazine through the farewell April 2012 issue that comes out in March 2012 as well as the digital Weekly SHONEN JUMP Alpha.
