but external HDDs are different story
anyone got any suggestions?
and whats a good size?
the movies are gonna be estimated at like 10GB each (bluray) and the games will be like 5-20GB

Buy a normal drive and an enclosed case.

I have one Seagate and one Toshiba and they both perform quite well.

I don't really recommend an external hard drive unless you want the portable factor (or your case somehow can't support more than one hard drive). Any of the large brands will do really. People will talk about failures but afaik despite there seeming a large amount of failures the figures are pretty normal. I'd imagine the seemingly large number of reported failures is due to the large amount of products sold. Seagate did have a notably high failure rate with some of their products but that was years ago and they've since sorted their stuff out or so it seems.
If you go for large external storage then you may want to look into USB3.0 if you plan to move lots of large files at once.

I don't think 3.0 is worth the extra money. Nothing I store and take out takes more than a minute at best no matter how large the file.
I have a 750GB 3.0 Toshiba and a 750GB 2.0 Seagate.
The Toshiba is indeed much faster, but if I honestly couldn't wait 6 extra seconds for that Bluray to go in or come out, then I have issues.
Anyways, product failures and brand name finger pointing is really unjustified so you can never really go off that. I had a bad experience with Sony Walkman and now I'm biased to ever buy their product again but many people are saying their Walkman is one of the best traditional mp3 players in the market.
I have great experiences with Asus and they're a trusted brand to me but there are many people who have had bad experiences and says things like "don't ever buy asus".

Let me guess, got one WD HDD. It didn't work, so you decided never to get WD again? ;P

WD had a bad rep at some point. I think it also depends on the product line. Their Caviar Black drives are pretty nice.
A semi-objective way to judge reliability for drives is to look at the warranty length offered. I remember reading about one of the manufacturers dropping warranty coverage from 5 years to 2 on one of their lines, while keeping it at 5 on others. Makes you wonder. x)

I have a WD Caviar Black 2TB Internal HDD and I love it <3 I've only had it for a little while, but so far I'm very happy with how it's functioning. It did exactly what I wanted it to in terms of speed... and so far, it's reliable, but that isn't saying much.

I've only owned a Toshiba, but it's worked pretty well for me. Had it for a few years. I want to get another one, though. Right now I have my "work" (schoolwork and personal artwork) and movies/shows all in the same one.

Well I have a Seagate 2 TB external, sofar about 400GB filled. I dont have any problems wit hit sofar and had it for about 8 months.
Normally just for storage purpose, I leave the power off and locked away in drawer when I dont use it.

The WD Passport Essential is supposed to be very good too, and I can certainly not complain about it myself so far.

Id say this for me as well, before my 250gb finally died then ii found out it was still on warranty, so i sent it back and they gave me a 500gb one.
