  Not for energy. It makes carbohydrates and oxygen, taking carbon dioxide out of the air. It would be useful to make up for the lost rain forests, imo. Could help with global warming as it would eliminate greenhouse gasses, if it could be done on a large enough scale.
  
  Though, the theories for eliminating that are pretty different like creating artificial sinks by putting something or other in the ocean, etc.
