As many other people have mentioned, it has to do with the "severity" of curse words.
Even if a person doesn't fully agree with that, one has to acknowledge that it exists.
However, I think your little situation also has to do with the whole "I know that person, so only I can insult them."
Your friend knows their boss, at least at a professional level, so she feels that she's merited to insult her boss.
But the moment you insulted her boss, then that suddenly was not okay.
It's like when you make fun of your parents, but then a friend does it. There's a difference.
Meh. Just my two cents.
(Although, personally. That boss sounds mean. If her hair naturally black, why should she change it?)

Yeah, seriously. The customer is king, but not god-emperor. Actually I think it might just be a fake reason to put pressure on her, because maybe he doesn't like black hair (or would like her more with a different hair colour...).

We do kind of set levels to different words, what's worse than others etc etc, but to me some words just seem awful. I wont stop someone from saying "cunt" but it makes me cringe when I hear it, so I don't use it myself.
Quote from Hannah's Lover;762458:
It's like how the only people actually offended by using "Nigga" in a friendly sense seem to be white people.
This isn't a valid example.
No one should use that word, ever. It was never meant to be a friendly term, it was never meant to joke around with friends just cuz. It's a derogatory term with a terrible origin and, in my opinion, using it is just a sign of ignorance. End of story.

Some cuss words are just too vulgar for my taste. I never liked the word cunt, nor does my Mom. Every other word is fine, but cunt is just.. meh. I can't really describe exactly why I don't like it, I just don't. It sounds distasteful.

I have to say that I agree with this 100%. I have never liked that word, and I do admit I've used it myself, not insulting anyone but imitating an episode of The Boondocks. Regardless, I still see it as a derogatory word, simply taking away the e and r doesn't change the original meaning. Aside from those times I imitated episodes, I don't use it at all. In fact, if I ever do imitate the episodes and the characters voices, I censor myself whenever I would come at the point to say it.

Maybe it's just the way it sounds? When you say the word, you put a lot of emphasis on the C and the T. That's what some people think as to why it sounds so bad. Then again, it is used strictly on women only so that could be the other reason.

Well why the hell come to me and ***** about her, does she expect me to back the boss up or something?

I wish I could say, but I don't know. lol. It's pretty ironic since I have the mouth of a sailor, but I just hate the word cunt.

Lol. That's exactly what I was thinking D:
But, it's mostly saying stuff like "Wow. Yeah, you are so right." or "I can't believe your boss would do that."
She probably just wanted someone to rant/rage to. I would just reply with neutral-ish statements, personally.

I'm actually doing my research paper on this.
The reason why swearing is deemed inappropriate is because they relate to topics that are considered inappropriate for the public.
"dick" = inappropriate
"penis" = same meaning, but acceptable if used in a scientific manner.
All in all, it depends on context.
In your particular case, the word "f__k" (to engage in sexual intercourse) and "c__t" (a crude name for a female reproductive system), are both related to sexual terms. While I don't know why your friend was okay with "f__k" but uncomfortable with "c__t", my best guess is because as females, it is that much more inappropriate to use the particular swear word that relates to yourselves. (This implies that you girls are okay with using the word "d__k", but please do forgive me if I am incorrect)
Then again, there are some people like myself who think the usage of swearing is plain stupid.
"This food is so f__king horrible!"
The subject within the sentence has NOTHING to do with sexual intercourse, and the only reason you're saying a swear word is to emphasize your argument. This emphasis can be done easy in many different ways, one of which is adding REASONS.
"This food is disgusting... it's under-cooked and smells weird"
How hard was that?
That's why when I see someone swear unnecessarily, I say that the person cannot express themselves properly, and is an idiot for that reason.
Don't misunderstand me; I occasionally swear, but that's when I'm in sudden pain and the word simply escapes my mouth.
Just my thoughts

It took me a couple seasons to be able to stand watching the Boondocks because it emphasized everything that I hate about ignorant people. Most people say "that's what makes it funny", imo that's what makes it pathetic. But that's a rant for another day.
Anyway I don't even go that far. I ignore/substitute it when I see it, I cringe in disgust when I hear it, and if someone around me uses it excessively I ask them to stop and I leave when they don't.

I wont say that swearing in general is stupid, because I do it myself, but there's a time and a place for everything.
For me swears are usually just a substitute for whatever word I can't think of at that moment that properly conveys what I'm trying to say. Sometimes f'ck just works, and sometimes like you mentioned, I may be in pain and it flies out. For the example you gave about food, f'ck was being used as an adjective lol. It was just that bad that saying it was terrible just doesn't cut it.
What's stupid to me are people that swear when they don't need to for the sake of swearing.

One guy actually did that a few years ago in High School. I was paying attention to something else and he did that behind me (but towards some other group of people; not at me) but I was distracted with something else and didn't hear him, but they all got on his case and made him apologize to me. I was the only (half) black guy there lol.
Before the guy apologized he said that he was imitating that thing from the Boondocks, but no one there (besides him) watches the Boondocks so they all get on his case about that.

Well, I'm easily entertained to be honest, so it never really bothered me, even though I hate that word. Makes me a hypocrite in that regard honestly. . .but those times when I did say it were my Freshmen/Sophomore year of HS. After those years passed, I completely stopped using the word. I hear people use it around me a lot and I just sigh and shake my head. Most common person that uses it is my grandmother, so I can't really do anything to stop it.
@Bolded part, Otto is a bad girl D:. . .

I do swear, but only with people I know don't mind. I tend to say "f'ckingsh!t" a lot because it makes me laugh.
