Some people are just plain MEAN

I won't put any member names, but one person in real life I know who is like this is my Writing Professor.
I also know that other Nation members will understand who these people are. I wouldn't be surprised if you were surrounded by them everyday.

Whatever you say, the person rejects your idea. They refuse to listen to your arguments and tries to subject you under their authority. Do you know people like that?

I understand that there may be differences between two individuals, but it's simply not right to be so hard-headed about your own opinions or beliefs. Recently, I was surprised to find that both in real life and on Nation, people would simply reject my opinions because it was me, or for other reasons that I cannot figure out.

If you are those people reading this, I really want to ask that you stop. It's not nice, and even if you claim that you're "trolling" or being the "devil's advocate", it's simply unacceptable to oppose a serious opinion so easily.

In many of these individuals, I realized that the common trait was that they refused or couldn't provide any counterarguments. As individuals who can actually think, I believe that if you have the mind to oppose someone, there must be a reason for that opposition. Heck, I don't care if it's because you were "raised to oppose everyone in the world". That's still a reason that you can provide to validate your arguments. Of course, you would simply be a loner because others would despise you, but that's not related to me or the arguments that you're making.

tl;dr. This applies to everyone: If you're the type of person who is always pessimistic about others' ideas, stay silent and try to understand why you find the idea unfavorable. If you are an intelligent human who can think for yourself, you should be able to do this.

I post this in the "Everything Else" section with the faith that Nation Members can respond maturely.

And claiming devil's advocate like that is totally wrong. Playing devil's advocate means you're arguing on the opposite side for the sake of (sensible) arguing.

Personally I don't like such people. Just ignore them and whatever arguments they bring up, and just immediately agree to their opinions regardless of what they're saying. Much easier that way, and it does take at least two people to create a problem. By just automatically agreeing with what they say a person is lost.

I have an aunt that's just as you described...reject everything under the pretense that you cannot be wrong. I guess you should do just as Chaoilin suggested, ignore them; pretty much what I ended up doing to my aunt.

yup, I know exactly what you mean. nothing you can do to reason with those people, once you've pissed them off they'll counter with whatever stupid **** they can come up with

annoys me tbqh but i'll agree with them to shut them up. not much else you can do with these kinda people o_o

Yeah, i've been thinking about this for the past few weeks. I've talked about him a little bit here, but my best friend is one of those kinds of guys. He doesn't always think he's right, but you usually never are. He acts like he has all this dirt and gossip on people and tries to make you feel like you're a loser. He even told me once that he was "glad he met somebody who was lower on the social totem pole" than he was (referring to myself) and when I told him I didn't care, he said, "Oh, nooooo...trust me, you do, you've just conditioned yourself to believe you don't care."

And then you just ignore them and walk away. At best you should laugh their ass off and entertain them because they're just pathetic and that's all they want.

The only thing is that thankfully, he doesn't do it all the time.

But yea, I would get into discussions with him and he'll think that he's always right. It's different than being confident because it's almost as if all the points you make, against said person's argument, are null and void because they come from yourself. It's even funnier when our discussions are of a scientific nature. I'm wrong, always. Apparently.

This is coming from my friend who thought that global warming/global climate change was not real and a conspiracy.

Friend: "But dude, all these smart people and books say that global warming can't be true."
Me: "Right. You do realize that's it's not only temperatures you have to look at - but also CO2 concentrations and oceans as well?"
Friend: "Well ... that's all a phase. It's the government trying to make everything seem worse, look at this 15-page article. They falsified the data and tables!"
Me: " *After reading said article* Well, it does seem to appear that way, but when you analyze the -"
Friend: "See? Didn't I tell you! Global warming isn't true!"
Me:: ... :fail3:

The best you can do is ignore them or go along with the flow. It's difficult for me to do, because I enjoy challenging people's opinions to see how well informed they are. People tend to join the bandwagon. It's kinda funny when you read some threads in here and you see it happen all the time.

A thread is made talking about one subject and the OP has a stance on it. Then some "respectable member" of the community writes a post with a view contrary to what eveyone already said. Guess what happens to everyone's opinions? "Oh I didn't mean it that way." or "Well, yeah of course, I meant to say that!"
