Problems with Internet. Is My Modem Too Old?

This is an archive of the mabination.com forums which were active from 2010 to 2018. Starting a few days ago, my modem gets stuck on the send light(blinking). Resetting the modem does nothing. After a while, the modem restarts itself and remains stuck on the send light. I'm not sure if it's the ISP or modem. When I called, they mentioned nothing about the internet being down in my area. Yesterday, it passed the send light after about 48 hours of blinking, but it got back to its usual state when I woke up this morning. When I got home, the send light blinked for another three hours until it reached the online light. After it came online, the connection was dropped for about 30 seconds before coming back up.

My modem is about eight and a half years old. Does anyone have any information or resolutions regarding this problem? Also, would the problem be my modem or ISP?

Well if you can borrow a modem you know works fine you could troubleshoot that way. I personally had a very bad time with some d-link modems with each dying and refusing to connect properly and though it sounds similar I can't say for sure if that's your issue.

It's hard for us to tell you anything. You need to call your ISP again, describe the issue, and they'll be able to remotely run some diagnostic tests on your modem.

If you're on a cable connection (as opposed to DSL.. [SIZE="1"]damn, I hate using that term because it's so stupid[/SIZE]), you may want to get a new modem anyway. There are cable modems that support DOCSIS 3.0 now, offering a significant advantage in performance over the 2.0 kind, if your ISP supports it.

Pretty sure it is old. Especially if you've upgraded your internet plans in the last few years, they're supposed to give you a new one.
