Notice it's based on the LGA2011 platform. 6core/12thread processors. :P Ivy won't do that, gotta wait for Ivy-E.

It's still pretty stupid to put that in a laptop. And I don't think it's the first dual GPU/3D laptop either. lulz

I'm glad they do it because it will eventually lead to tablet-sized devices with this kind of power, and battery tech to support it. I find it silly for anyone to actually buy one at this point and for the next several years though.

Except the thing that leads to that kind of thing is hardware advances rather than hardware packages by third parties.

Them packaging it is what leads to hardware designers shrinking things and making them more efficient. If there was no demand for mobile computing we would only have desktop-sized components still, since it costs a lot less in R&D to keep things large. Making a laptop like this is obviously going to suck balls at battery life and heat issues, though with enough demand for improvement it will improve.

A good example would be AMD and Nvidia's mobile version graphics cards. They wouldn't exist if not for these kind of things. Same for intel's high performance mobile CPUs. Without any serious demand for it, anyone trying to make a mobile device would need to use stock components made for a desktop and then pray that it performs reasonably.

Except that in a lot of cases they don't really do that much. The "good example" of AMD and nVidia's mobile cards are for the most part just repackaged GPUs with specific power and/or thermal limits in mind. The GTX580M for example isn't a shrunk GF110, in fact it's strikingly similar to the GF114 in the GTX555/560/560Ti and even has the same name.

I personally don't see much improvement coming about just from this either. From my POV significant improvements will come about in architectural changes and the like (Iby Bridge for example is looking extremely appealing in terms of power use and the like).

In this particular example the your reasoning loses a bit too because it's not suitably built. This isn't about meeting any demand other than that of excess.
