Pet FAQ/Guide
Pet Basics
Pet Basics
What are pets?
Pets are companions for your Mabinogi character that can be summoned and de-summoned at your whim.
However, unlike many games, these pets have many functions and don't just sit there looking cute.
So what can pets do?
Every pet is different in some aspect, however they all have these basic functions.
-Can use regular attacks and combat skills
-Most pets come with Smash, Counterattack, Defense, Combat mastery, and Critical Hit
-Have their own inventory that can be accessed if the pet is summoned.
-Use at least one basic combat magic bolt spell (ice bolt, lightning bolt, fire bolt).
-Can use rest, first aid, and the healing spell (only targets the owner).
Note: There are some pets that do not have magic spells (ex. elephants) but almost all pets come with at least one spell.
Is my pet permanent? How long can I use it?
All pets are PERMANENT, there is no way to lose it other than manual deletion.
All races of pets have a certain "Summon Time."
-For example, Herb Pigs have 98 Min summon time.
Anytime the pet is out the Summon Time will go down.
If the Summon Time runs out then the pet will be de-summoned and cannot be accessed (this includes the pet inventory).
Summoning time is reset at 7AM PST.
I can log into my pet?
On the character menu, you can choose to play as your pet
On your pet you can attack, go into dungeons, join parties, chat with others, and other basics your character can do.
Summoning Time is still depleted as normal and if it runs out you will be logged off.
Things you cannot do if logged on a pet:
-Talk to NPCs (there are a few exceptions).
-Enter certain dungeons, mainly mainstream quest dungeons.
-Use Mana Tunnels or Moon Gates.
Pet Growth
Do pets age? What does this do to them?
Just like normal characters, pets will age every Saturday at 12PM PST.
They will reach a maximum age of 15.
Every time they age, they will gain/lose some stat points.
As seen in this chart, this pet will gain stats but also lose some as it ages.
[Image: http://img710.imageshack.us/img710/7117/agebonus.jpg]
Older pets also have a weaker Companion bonus that also lasts a shorter time span. [Explained Below]
Similar to humans, pets have different STAT (strength, dex, mana points, etc.) growth rates at different ages. [Explained Below]
When should I start training my pet?
Similar to humans, pets have different STAT (strength, dex, mana points, etc.) growth rates at different ages.
In this chart, you can see the pet will gain the most MP at age one.
[Image: http://img710.imageshack.us/img710/909/agebonusm.jpg]
Simply find the ages where your pet gets highest growth of the STAT you want.
For example, if you want a pet to gain high strength, train it at ages where the strength bonus is high
Use resources to carefully choose what age to level your pet.
How can I train my pet fast?
Pets get the highest experience gain when you log in as them.
Pets gain a certain exp bonus depending on what pet they are.
-For example, the Herb Pig gains 140% of normal experience.
-This only applies when logged in as the pet.
The fastest way to level a pet is to party while logged in as your pet and do a good dungeon run.
If your character is very strong, you can summon your pet and train it by yourself (the pet gains 25% of the exp you gain).
Pet Rebirth
Pet rebirth very is different and similar to Character rebirth.
In order to do a pet rebirth, you need any Pet Card purchased from the Nexon Cash Shop.
On the character menu select your pet and choose rebirth.
What does pet rebirth do?
-The card you use for rebirth determines the new kind of pet your old pet will rebirth into
-For example, Dog using a Cat card to rebirth will turn into a Cat.
-Your pet stats, age, companion bonus, are all reset as if you made a new pet with that pet card.
-The only thing that remains from your old pet are the skills and skill ranks.
-For example you can rebirth a Mini Bear into a Cow and have a Cow with Rank 6 smash.
Does that mean my pet can use new skills?
Unfortunately, no your pet cannot.
Pets can only USE skill that they would normally have (exception of magic bolts).
Your pet can still gain the stat bonuses from any skills they cannot use.
For example, a Cow with windmill will get the strength bonus.
What's the point of rebirthing my pets?
In many cases, it's better to just make a new pet rather than rebirth.
If you want to give a combat pet high ranked skills that they normally cannot attain (level requirement to get the ranks are too high) you can train an easier pet and then rebirth to get the high skill ranks.
For example, a wolf needs to hit level 50 for Rank 6 smash and critical.
Instead of leveling for days, just level a Mini Bear to the 30s and rebirth it into a wolf.
The wolf will have the Rank 6 skills without all the work.
It's also useful for giving pets any magic bolts they don't have.
Stat bonuses from certain skills can also be a plus.
For example, having the thunder skill on a pet that needs MP is very helpful.
Choosing a Pet
There are many good pets and there is no one pet that beats the rest.
Cost is a huge issue, many pets exceed $10.
If you're choosing a pet pick between Mounts, Combat, Inventory, or Special Abilities.
Mounts
Mounts allow you to ride on them and move much faster than normal running speeds.
You can pick between one seater or two seater mounts (one seater are notably faster than two seater).
There are also flying mounts, these only work in Iria and fly much faster than land mounts can run.
-However their land speed is slow.
Combat
Pets can be extremely strong, sometimes stronger than some beginner characters.
Pick a pet with high strength (int for magic pets) because then it will do much more damage.
When picking a combat pet pay attention to skill growth, one pet may get extremely strong skills at low levels while one pet might never get skills over Rank C.
Compare these two

[Image: http://img685.imageshack.us/img685/7117/agebonus.jpg]
Obviously the pet on the bottom is a much better combat pet since it maxes all the combat skills at level 33 while the one on top only maxes Combat mastery at level 44.
There are also pets with special skills that make it special (duh?) [Explained Below]
Inventory
You will be surprised how useful pet inventory banks are.
They are like mini banks but:
-Shared among all characters in that account (on the same server).
-Can be accessed anytime the pet can be summoned
Inventory size can help you choose between mounts or combat pets but there are certain pets that just have a ton of inventory space for their price.
Special Abilities
Some pets have extra actions or skills that make them awesome.
There are currently three transforming pets that can use the Windmill skill (although it only reaches Rank A).
There are pets that allow you to gather herbs, milk, wool, cobwebs, etc.
Some pets can loot your items for you and hold it in their inventory.
Some pets just have fun skills that put you in a bubble and let you float around.
