  I have MSN and Skype so most of my one-on-one messages tend to be there.

  I'm in the "don't get very many PMs" boat on this forum, but even on others where I'm way more active I get one, maybe 2 PMs a day, so it's a long time before one hits the bottom of the last page...
  
  But yes the spam example is a valid concern.

  This varies, really. Even if you don't get a lot of messages, you might send 20-50 back and forth with a friend one day and suddenly your inbox takes a huge hit. Or, as TA said, it's possible to sort of PM spam to troll.
