Since I now have room for it, and due to the fact that I'm getting low on space on my laptop, I'm planning on getting a desktop soon, but I'm not very knowledgable on what would be best to purchase. I'll need a moniter as well.
I'd like to spend less than a thousand, and it'd be nice if it could handle the demands of games such as Guild Wars 2 and Tera.
Thanks for reading.

Guild Wars and TERA don't need that much in terms of powerhouse. Even the old GTX 9800 (around 50-70 dollars) can handle it decently.
Your budget is less than a thousand, so most likely we're not going to go overboard at all.
Building from scratch checklist:
CPU (Computer Processor)
GPU
RAM/Memory
Hard Disk Drive
Power Supply
Motherboard (One that supports the said CPU and the components you want)
Case (This will have to fit all the parts you need with some room for cooling. You will also want one that allows for easy wiring)
Since your issue was space before, you can probably find a 1 or 2TB HDD online somewhere. It ranges around $130-160 for 7200 RPM SATA for the 2TB from Seagate. Minimum to run GW2 and TERA on decent settings aren't much, even my laptop with a low-end discrete chip can run them. Are you planning on using the desktop for more high-end gaming in the future or will that be it for you with just those two?

Well, I probably will play other things as well, but I would hope that if I could run those two, that it'd be good for running most other things as well. I'm not sure of what'd be more high-end than those two. Would you know the cost difference between a setup that would run GW2 smoothly, and a setup that would run higher end things smoothly?
I'd be fine with a 1TB HDD. I've had this laptop with 278GB for a year and a half or so, and I probably could clear up some space if needed. However, it can't handle something like a large world on Terraria, so it can't really handle games that well. I was mainly just waiting for a time such as now to purchase a desktop.

Since you mentioned gaming, im leaning more towards AMD for cost effective performance. I dont know whether or not you'll be building this, so i soppose a prebuilt or a barebone would do nicely. As for monitors, newegg always has great deals.

If you want a prebuilt, iirc this place has much better deals than the standard companies like Dell/Alienware/HP/etc:
