Get a new computer would be my first suggestion. Not being able to play Minecraft with no lag under normal settings is pretty bad. You could get a pretty decent one for cheap.
If you don't want a new computer or can't get one,
game booster should help. That should help your FPS a bit.
Also try blowing all the dust out of your computer. It can cause it to over heat and slow you down. If you're using a laptop maybe try putting it on a hard surface instead of your lap as well.

Well for Minecraft, you could try getting a mod called Optifine, it sorta optimizes the way the game handles the rendering and processing or something like that.

Yes. It does help on limited hardware. Best way (IMO) is to get a new GPU if possible. My old budget $50 card from 2008 can handle Vanilla MC (basically) lag free, in the far setting, with fancy graphics, at well over 60 FPS.
I get around 30 with Dynamic Shadows (with the special Lite shader (only adds the shadows, no fancy color correction or blur or anything).

Mind you that Optifine is not updated to 1.2.4 yet, so if you happen to be using 1.2.4, it won't work and will most likely crash your game.

@Blue: If you're running a desktop, might as well buy a graphics unit that works. Sounds like you're lacking one if its not running MC on normal. Mabinogi will never be truly lagless unless you're running some high-end CPU overclocked and even then the optimization issues would still show.
