I can tell that this has been pretty controversial in the past, but now, no one seems to be debating this at all.
I've always thought that Lann and Karok served very similar purposes in a battle, except that Lann is a better mob tamer, and Karok is a better bosser.
But anyway, what's everyone else's final thoughts/expert opinions on the issue of Lann vs. Karok? I haven't played for nearly a year now, so this is kinda the first thing I wanna get up to date with.
This topic doesn't concern PvP, by the way.

Lann isn't DPS. Unless you mean Deaths Per Second.
Spear Lann's major problem is that he doesnt have any type of dodge or way to survive, so its really hard to actually get DPS in.
Sword Lann cant even be DPS, there is a lot against a sword lann. You're constantly slip dashing waiting for an opening, and when you get one, odds are its only big enough for a double crescent, and if you crit it actually slows you down. Butttt, since Lann damage %'s suck you can't do noticable damage unless you use Gliding Fury, which is a very risky move, It leaves you open, and worst of all for some reason it doesnt have an invincibility frame. So you can be hit while using it.
Karoks have it a little easier with survivabilty and damage

also, no one does vind PVP, its a horrible system.

Lann is the obligatory dual weld class, and Karok is there to intimidate little children.
and yes the pvp system is terrible, even when it doesn't lag

Everyone's role is to do damage and not die, it's as simple as that. The only exceptions are instances where you can neglect doing damage in return for helping your party do damage. Main example of this are the ballistae in Dragon, Glas, and Titan.
Regardless, Lann and Karok haven't changed much over the year.
Lann has gained a few new attacks, with the most notable being Sword Lann's Pummel Storm (which allows him a better damage option without Gliding Fury). It's risky, but it gives him an option for downed bosses. Uncaps also have increased the type of stats you can get off of skills, which really helps passively. There's also the relatively new trend of "Defence Stacking"; since it's possible to get up to 8000-10000 defence with a large enough investment, you could make a character who takes minimal damage from anything a boss does. Spear Lanns love doing this as it allows them to go back to Hidden-era play styles, in which they can spin the boss to death with their high DPS with a low risk of death.
Karok has gained his second weapon, the Cestus. While Cestus has a fairly low damage output, it's dodge features (Absorb Shock and Weave) are easier to time and use than Sword Lann's slip dash. It also has a pretty unique buff system to allow you to boost your stats by a fairly large amount. Pillars hasn't really gained much, but Karok's Absorb Shock has always been amazing at plowing through attacks.
Really, it's just more of the same. You'll likely meet some elitists who will kick you off their boats for not being part of their ideal party composition, but that's just people being silly. Besides from Spear Lann and his lack of a proper dodge (negated by defence stacking), there aren't many instances where one class has it significantly harder than another.

Lann is more straight forward to play than pillar Karok.
Pillar Karok has the potential to be the highest damaging class on a regular basis (assuming relatively fair, non-"stacked" stats).
Cestus Karok plays like a sword Lann/scythe Evie/pillar Karok hybrid, and has pretty good DPS in actuality (despite whatever people will tell you about his percentiles, he really does do good damage). Pretty easy to pick up and play, although playing him effectively can be tedious due to buff management. His main flaw though, is when everyone Trans, since he hits the ATT cap insanely easily, which puts him at a big disadvantage.
If I had to choose between a sword Lann, spear Lann, pillar Karok or cestus Karok to be in my party in any given mission, and if they all had average stats... I would pick the cestus Karok. Pretty much the most reliable of the four, since he has the lowest skill floor.
