Yup, I saw a documentary on this before, creepy stuff.
Also a friend of mine that did a study abroad program ended up out in the Aokigahara Forest area, like on the edge of it where the roads are, while not knowing anything about the history of the forest. He missed a bunch of buses or something and ended up walking a stretch of the road. To this day he says he's never been more creeped out in his life, the flashlight he had kept dying, and he kept seeing things and was also praying to God to get him out alive (to my knowledge he's not religious at all). He was saved by some person that drove by and was basically hurrying him to get in the car so they could get out of the area.

I assume that forest is haunted forever by the ghosts of those whose lives were so tragic, they decided to end it all to only end up on Earth forever due to the anguish.

The darker the presence, the more frightful the haunt. Especially since this one seems to call out to those who are unstable.
