Well, I gotta say that having the right starting materials is pretty important. My list of really required stuff:
$7 -Craft Knife* (X-Acto, usually)
$20 -Cutting Mat [Either soft or hard, though I used an X-Acto branded one] (Though I didn't get mine until about a month in)
$3-7 -Cork-Backed Steel Ruler (Not too important if you have a steady hand, but makes larger crafts much easier)
$10 -110lb Paper, (I still haven't gone through 50 sheets, and it's $10 for 250 on amazon)
Priceless -Workspace @_@ (A cluttered desk doesn't help when you've misplaced your knife OTL)
Free -
Pepakura Viewer** (A 3d model viewer that allows you to print and view the model.)
*Blades do cost some amount of money, so expect it. Early on, I would try to conserve blades, but a fresh blade and learning how to use it correctly can make a project look so much cleaner.

I started with works from
cubeecraft and it gave me a nice place to start.
Here are some examples of how I started

This is probably one of the most difficult on cubeecraft, because of the sheer amount of tabs.

After cubeecraft, I found a nice whale template online, which I made for my Valentine.

Along with the whale, I began making
Pixel Pages as some beginner's dioramas. Since they folded flat and I could make nice envelopes, I gave those away to whomever I saw fit on Valentine's Day (though the whale was special).
I had to take a long break, due to schoolwork, but through march I created the Mr. Saturn, 60's Batman, and Pedobear cubeecraft. I've also started work on an Animal Crossing model, though it is more complicated, but in some ways easier, than the cubeecrafts.
And about Pepakura Viewer, it allows you to view papercrafts in a new way. I'll let the screenshots speak for themselves.
