Quite personally, I like the idea. I know it doesn't do much, but it does spread awareness— and my school officially supports the day, and allows students to participate. It's one of the few days where there is a lot of "pride" for GSM/LGBTQ students.
Last year after DOS, I came out to the classroom that I was standing in when "Breaking the Silence" was announced a few minutes prior to the school day closing.
What are your opinions on DOS? It is this Friday, April 20th.

I don't see much point in it. Of course, some people may use it as an excuse to not talk to the teacher.

I didn't even know it was coming up.
Since I don't really actually speak to anyone inrl on a daily basis besides my Mom, I don't know if there's much I can do. I always offer as much support as I possibly can to my fellow LGBT folks, so hopefully that makes up for my half-assed silence?

What is with people scheduling all this human rights stuff on 4/20? Isn't that when the Kony cover the night thing is too?

I honestly don't care. I won't do it myself since I'm neither for or against these rights.

I don't really do that kind of thing, since I don't have a need for it.
I can see why people do it though.

I don't even have school on that day, so I wonder how our school will do it. u_u
I understand the cause behind it and I fully support that, but it's like the "Spread the Word to End the Word" campaign.
And a few things on that;
1. How does not using 'the word' change anything?
2. You can't change the dictionary definition of the word, and 'the word' is a perfectly correct term to use, albeit hurtful.
3. It's just an excuse for self-righteous and pompous assholes to shout "SPREAD THE WORD TO END THE WORD" if you happen to use "the word" (which has happened to me before, sometimes it slips out and people jump on your ass about it).
Um, anyways. So I support the Day of Silence, but I won't do it.
Also it kind of annoys me when teachers do it. I've had teachers in the past do it and it's infuriating to actually have a class where the teacher insists on pantomiming the lesson to you.

This sounds incredibly stupid, I'm all for gay rights, but to force students to sit through a day of school where they effectively learn nothing is an incredible waste of resources and time.

Seeing as tons of LGBT people are constantly bullied, mocked, abused and sometimes even
killed for being who they are, I'm pretty sure those lucky few who don't have such problems can take at-least a few hours out of a
single day to pay tribute to said LGBT people.
If you're a decent enough student, missing a day shouldn't be harmful at all anyways.

Sure, but scheduling a day where nobody does anything doesn't solve the underlying problem. I'd rather see a school bring in speakers to communicate with students about bullying and how to be tolerant of others.

Gay rights are human rights too.

They arent forced. Its an optional thing. I said our school supports it because some schools wont allow students to remain silent in classes. Those who are participating cannot be forced to speak, but only if they registered to participate.

Ah ok, makes more sense now. Obvious misread on my part.

Never heard of such a thing, if I was in school I'd do it. Not really possible with work.
