  I find that you have to actually watch soccer in a different mind set, since it's fundamentally different than all the popular American sports. Soccer often requires a ridiculous amount of on the fly patience in setting up attacks that split defenses. Unfortunately for most people it's basically like waiting for long periods of time to see 1 really good moment. Ala Nascar where people will go to see crashes, or hockey where people just want to see fights but have to wait a long time to see them.

  Check out Area no Kishi. It's a soccer manga which I pretty much credit for sparking my interest in the sport.
