This reminds me of my French teacher in high school.
He was extremely focused on academics and naturally was the leader of the Honor Society.
He always stressed doing well in class and getting good grades. Heck, our 12th grade French class he treated as a college seminar. He'd get quite frustrated when we didn't do well.
I like that, more teachers need to actually drive their students to succeed and work hard. Builds character and work ethic. Something, that most people SEVERELY lack these days. Which, is yet, another huge pet peeve of mine.
I had a teacher like that last year. Handed us readings from her own grad school seminars and had us work through them. She would help us if we needed it, but otherwise left us to our own devices. She loved us all dearly but wouldn't be happy with us if we slacked off. A balance like that is perfect.
And now she's getting yelled at by some girl's dad because the girl was "too busy with sports" and has a bad grade this quarter, and the dad wants the teacher to give his daughter "make-up" work to help her grade. Fucking...seriously?
My English teacher grades harshly but helps you step-by-step to improve your writing. I've learned so much from him this year and i'd be devastated if I had gotten a different teacher. I really just wanted to get through another year of English and didn't have much faith in the help a teacher would give me, but I went from being a C- student to being an A student. You have to be willing to let someone help you, though, and a teacher like him can coax that out of just about anyone. The people who bitch and complain about him are the ones that won't listen to him.
But unmotivated teachers don't help anyone. And it's hard to get teachers motivated, if there's so much pressure on them to make sure every kid passes and understands what they're teaching, in addition to being the role-model and invested person they're supposed to be. And not all students want to even be there, so they won't do anything. A student who doesn't do anything should get the grade they deserve, which is a big fat F. But what if you fail that student, and you lose your job because you're supposed to be fair and equal to everyone? What are you supposed to do then? How is it fair to ANYONE?
I would never want to be a teacher. It's one of the hardest and least-respected jobs ever.
