Isn't that because Nintendo owns the "cross" d-pad design?
Also Nintendo hasn't made a original traditional controller in so long

:/
What a boring looking controller. It will be nice to have but still... it looks really generic.

All I care about in a controller, is if its comfortable and if it functions well. Honestly, who gives a shit what it looks like. Though most consumers do :P
Edit: People on the Facebook IGN post for this are whining that it is a rip-off of the Xbox controller Lol
Sure, if you want. I mean I compared it to my Razer Xbox controller and it even has a similar shape, WiiU one being more rounded. Only so much you can do with a controller design before it becomes commonly used :P

WASD keyboards are so boring.
Nonetheless, I would prefer it if Nintendo kept backwards compatibility with the Gamecube controller. Doesn't sound like it though, so I'm disappointed.
The only real difference from the Xbox controller is that the right analog stick and the 4 face buttons switched positions (so it'd have symmetrical analog sticks like the PS3).

Lies, Classic controller pro.

Looks pretty sleek to me. Better than their stupid tablet-thing controller, at least.
Too bad the Wii U will be an underpowered piece of junk, just like the Wii. Apparently it won't support Unreal Engine 4, while the next gen PS and Xbox will.

I think the Wii U is a current generation console more than anything.

I suppose that's a way to put it. But then what will Nintendo have once its rivals will release their next gen consoles? :(

Something innovative that the others will attempt to copy off of, again.

They'll just keep doing what they've done for the past 20 years and make great games to go with their consoles. And to be quite honest, graphics really don't account for much in terms of how well recieved a game will be in most cases.
The one thing Nintendo did right this time around is offer a good controller that is compatible with traditional games. I can even see myself playing games like halo, infamous and batman arkham asylum on the WiiU Tablet (to name a few).

Is that the PlayStation 2 one?
What I meant is like a new design (and obviously button layout) like the N64 and GC controllers were.

to be honest, Sony and Microsoft absolutely bought up the whole motion control focus.

Neither does the specs and actual quality of the console itself determine which console will be the most successful.
A couple years ago with the Wii, Xbox and Ps3 console wars, the Wii came out on top while the Ps3 was the weakest contender even though the Wii's hardware was the worst out of the three.
