Today, Nintendo announced that thew new Smash Bros. for the Wii U and the 3DS will be developed by Namco Bandai Games and Namco Bandai Studio. Masahiro Sakurai is helming the project. Of course, Sakurai's studio, Sora, will be assisting in development.
Namco's Masaya Kobayashi, who's worked on Ridge Racer, and Yoshito Higuchi of the Tales games, will be developing the game on the Namco side.
There is a precedent for this. The most recent Smash Bros., Super Smash Bros. Brawl, was developed by a handful of studios, too, such as Monolith Soft, Paon, and Game Arts.

They're going to add their own characters just because they can.
I hope they add someone from .hack//imoq instead of the //G.U. series.
.hack//G.U. was not original at all and was terribly bad.

This can't be too bad.

Might or might not add in characters under the Namco Bandai license.
This isn't the first time Project Sora hired outside help on Super Smash Bros. Brawl was worked on by Game Arts (the creators of Grandia), for one thing. But there is no Grandia or Xenosaga characters in Super Smash Bros.
Namco Bandai is most likely there to assist with the coding, that's all.

Oh god I would die if they added Chaos and Kos-Mos to the game.
Chaos is my all time favorite character of probably video game history.
