The purpose of spanking is to administer pain without causing injuries. You're taking the legitimate problem of child abuse, and attributing all the problems associated with real child abuse to regular spankings. Banning spanking to deal with child abuse is kind of like banning oxygen to deal with forest fires. There are plenty of children who have been spanked who turn out just fine.

  Fear driven punishment breds resentment and alot of children will rebel more

  Ultimately, it's a matter of how the spanking is done. Logically, corporal punishment for little children does have a lot of merit because pain (notice I didn't say injury) is a clear sign that the parent is not happy with the child's behavior. In the same way a child learns not to touch the stove because the stove might be hot, the child learns not to throw tantrums because he knows he's going to get a spanking.
  
  In a lot of homes these days, spanking has been replaced with yelling, and I know from experience that yelling is way more traumatizing than any spanking I ever got. Even worse than yelling, is putting kids on drugs to try to fix their behavior problems.

  Otherwise we would have alot of rebel kids since most elementary and middle schools only have yelling left
  recess is getting abolished in favor of more learning time so the punishmens based on no recess are viod

  I was hoping it was some twist on words, but, it seems they really did go there. Whether they mean that or are just wording things very poorly, it's -very- disappointing.
  
  After the last spanking debate on this site, I don't really feel the need to get into another one...but I'll be watching, so play nice.

  I know, I know, "it's not that bad." Well, obviously it's bad enough to scare the kid into not doing it again in fear of receiving more pain, or else there's no point. I mean it is to "discipline" them, right? Either the intention is to scare children through pain or to cause pain just for the sake of it, so which one is it? Is there a third option I'm somehow missing?
  
  Have I made an error in my thinking process? Because if not, it's absurd to think this is a realistic solution, regardless of whether or not it's a functional one.

  Problem solving skills is what makes programmers invaluable tools, with the ability to solve any problem with code. Take away critical thinking and you can kiss that skill out the window.
  
  Do they just want to make all these children mindless army soldiers, doing their bidding?
  
  GOP is getting stupider and stupider which is pushing me and more to the left as I see more and more of their stupidity.

  1) Parents with low IQs tend to have kids with low IQs.
  
  2) Children who have significantly lower IQs may be frustrating to parents who don't know how to handle them.
  
  3) Getting spanked a couple times is a real world education, since one's peers may do similar violent things. If coping with the real world lowers IQ, then there's no avoiding it. Would I rather have been hit occasionally by my parents (which I can hardly remember) or the neighborhood jerk who "didn't like my attitude"?

  Don't you think the smarter kids can learn to behave from observing the dumb kids being spanked by the parents? At the very least, they should be able to understand the cause-effect relationship of what got them spanked sooner.
  
  Basically, the "science" argues that getting spanked makes you dumb. I say that being smart means you know how to avoid being spanked.
  
  I didn't read the entire post, but nothing I read showed the researchers finding anything beyond correlation.
