They come in from the top, but how would they drown if there's that many flies inside it already? I guess they just have a harder time getting in than out...

That's highly effective, and I'm actually looking for those since I'll be taking my annual trip to the Missouri park in a few weeks.

If we had a fly problem I'd probably get some too.

The only real drawback to this bag is (from what I read of the reviews)...
It smells absolutely rancid after a day of use, and the smell is strong and far-reaching.

Fly traps work 'cause flies don't have much precision in their flying, I guess? Or they don't try to naturally be precise where they're not used to it, at least. All fly traps generally have a funnel into which flies can fly in easily, guided by the plastic out the small hole on the inside of the trap casing. At that point, they can't figure out that in order to get back outside, they have to fly through that tiny hole. They crawl all over the transparent plastic casing instead, until they die.
EDIT: Oh.. and what to do with all the dead flies you'd catch? Some guy decided to make art!

Venus Fly Traps don't really work, well because Venus Fly Traps usually have to be fed by hand. :l
You have to poke a bug in that's already dead and make it hit this sensor thing in the mouth, then the mouth will close, after that you'll have to gently pinch the closed mouth to help it swallow it I guess? I saw it once, they're quite fussy.
