this the cat's first time with vista
and the cat keeps getting system messages
like automatic shutdown for updates
or
need your permission to run this program etc.
all the cat did so far was tone down the graphics because they were unnecessary

You can turn off the auto shut down in control panel -> security center.
And the permission thing is called user account control. Turn it off in control panel -> user account.

I use AVG. I used to have that.. forgot the name, it's a little red umbrella, but it started becoming annoying with the popup thing at startup owo.

Avira? It's pretty good but annoying. I don't trust intrusive antivirus software.

I have UAC turned off. The messages mostly just condition you to click OK w/o reading, unfortunately.
Free security, I use avast Antivirus and Spybot Search & Destroy.

Yah.
For me with AVG now, it's just kind of sitting there.
I don't really do anything with it, and it occasionally tells me to restart.

I'd suggest Avast, Malwarebyte's Anti-Malware, and Spybot Search & Destroy.

It checks for Trojans and other things too.
Heck it found some bad virus in a torrent I downloaded.
