Are there others out there that use this amazing, free, digital image manipulation program?
Open-source can be a gamble.
I tend to approach such software with caution, most of it scares away the masses with sharp edges and bleak interfaces (and the lack of an Apple logo). However, if you look in the right places, you can find a true gem. And that is what GIMP is. I never have to look longingly across the street at pricey programs for a feature that GIMP lacks. It seems to have it all, just not right away. There is a vast array of plugins to customize the program to do just what you want it to. It seems because of this, the learning curve is not as steep as with a paid program such as Photoshop. Not to say it comes as a bare-bones program. I've only needed to download a few extras for animating and of course some brushes. I think because it is in fact open-source, it is easier to get to know the program and thus, find it easier to use.
Overall, if you are willingly to spend some time getting to know the interface, GIMP is a great program, especially for beginners. You will come away knowing more about what to do and what you can do within the digital art world. Even seasoned artists will find it has all the necessary tools without the unnecessary price tag. ^^
What are other people's opinion's of GIMP?

I don't use GIMP because I don't do any graphics related work. I use Paint.NET for my basic needs. If I needed more powerful software, I'd definitely go the GIMP route.
Glad to see someone supporting open source software, though. :P You'll find a lot of people are losers and will pirate industrial grade software like Photoshop for their forum sig making needs instead, lol.

I dished out 2 grand for the Adobe CS5 Master Collection when it came out. Saddest part about it is I only use Photoshop.
But GIMP is a nice program for those who don't pirate/wanna pay that much for PS.

GIMP has its uses, but paying for PS if you're rich or pirating it if you're poor is so much easier and it gives you a better quality program.

I used GIMP and it did a pretty good job for being a free program. It was pretty simple and I mostly used it to change canvas sizes for probably avatars. Not to mention I believed I also used it to make some signatures (that were pretty horrendous and probably pick up on practicing again). I never picked GIMP up thoroughly since I stuck to PS.

I prefer GIMP over CS5 for certain things.
But the new GIMP switching to making you export in order to save as PNG is a real turn off.

I agree with exporting being a pain, it seemed better to just have one action: save. This feature will hopefully grow on us eventually however.
I do like the adjustment bars that also came with the update, although that took some getting used to.

I used Gimp at first for animating and etc. But I moved on to Photoshop. Makes more sense to me.

I use Paint Tool Sai, but before this I used Gimp and enjoyed it very much. It was very useful--until I found something better of course..

Used GIMP a bit. Takes awhile to get used to, but I ended up using Paint.NET more because of the better interface.
