Hmm, on the video game front huh. Not that I want to promote korea by any means, but since you've pitched for America its only fair.
1. Korea is far more accepting of otaku culture, and in turn video games. Esports being acknowledged as a national sport means people are more tolerant of the medium, going as far as to have 2 tv stations dedicated to video games.
2. PC/net cafes offer alternatives that may be cheaper or more expensive depending on what you do. Its a good environment for sure though.
3. Weak piracy and copyright laws make availability of low cost bootleg games very common. You can buy games that aren't supposed to be released yet, or games that are not meant to be localized hacked into a version that the Korean consoles can play, and games that aren't supposed to be on the PC are often seen being sold for the PC.
