Too bad that it's much easier said than done.

Not to mention that it isn't just an issue of getting up and doing something. Given the attitude most people have towards sex workers, it's no surprise that they're not willing to go up against it. Not everyone is strong enough to handle that kind of stigma, it's most of the reason that they're in the business in the first place; their lives are usually horrible and their self-esteem and self-worth is seldom high. Assholes aren't willing to make it easy for these women; cops and other authority figures who are supposed to be there to help and protect often abuse sex workers because they think they somehow deserve it or that it won't matter because of their profession.
In cases like that you need outside help to get things going; people who actually have money, time and resources. Getting sex workers into a better life is hard enough as it is, especially given that most of the money they make it spent on drugs and other expenses rather than good, basic necessities and other things to keep them healthy and clean.
So while I do get what the article is saying, to me it seems like they're implying that western sex workers are too weak and/or lazy to do it themselves unlike their eastern counterparts, which is a load of shit.
Tell that to them, the suffragettes, any other kind of women rights organisations, the earlier LGBT movement, the various student movements in the 60s and 70s, the early members of labour unions.
It's funny that you're saying exactly that which you a few paragraphs afterwards deny as bullshit. Many of them aren't in different positions, some may even be in worse positions.
Do you seriously believe it's hard to find people with money and time in and around the sex work industry? We don't have to look to pornography producers to find rich people in that ever-sprawling business, and time is easy enought o come by with 40-hour weeks, which I don't think is surpassed by most sex workers.
I'm sorry, but I doubt the drug etc. comment is well-founded.
