Connection to Internet

This is an archive of the mabination.com forums which were active from 2010 to 2018. Occasionally (maybe once a day) I'll just be browsing/playing on ze interwebs and I'll suddenly lose connection to the internet. However it's not the internet itself as the other computers/devices connected to the wifi are fine. It's not a huge problem as all I have to do is restart the modem.. but in the middle of a dungeon or something it can be pretty infuriating.

My computer is connected to the modem/router via an ethernet cable and whenever this problem occurs the ONLY way to fix it is to turn the modem off and back on, I've tried unplugging the ethernet and re-connecting and restarting the computer neither work. I bought another ethernet to test if that'd fix the problem.. it did not. I've even tried the two different cables in each of the four possible ethernet slots.. still nothing.

Has this happened to anyone before? It's led me to believe it's either the actual connection port on my PC or the modem itself.

Modem/router is a NETGEAR DG834G v4

If restarting your computer won't re-establish the connection, then your modem is probably the problem. :<

Have you ever done a firmware update on it? These tend to reduce compatibility bugs and improve performance. According to the product support page, the current version for your region is 5.01.16. You can check your modem's current version at its control panel at http://192.168.0.1.

If you already have that version installed, then try resetting the settings to defaults. Maybe there's a weird firewall rule in there or something.

If you're using reduced MTU settings, try setting them back to normal. Maybe the modem's firewall doesn't like weird MTUs.

Check if your computer's network adapter has a driver update available. It might fix whatever incompatibility problem there might be between the router and your PC, too.

...there's probably other things you could test as well, but that's all I could think off the top of my head while on my short break at work. xD Post how it went, and good luck!

I would rather not reset my settings until it's the very last option. I had that version but it has been a while since I updated so I just did it again to be sure.. never know.

I've never messed around with MTU, haven't had a reason to. Network adapter is up to date too. I'll see if the re-downloading and updating of the version fixes it or not and I'll post the results. Worse comes to worse I'll reset settings and re-do all the firewall rules again.. could very well be the reason. Thanks!
