They never were, that is what I named them because Black 2 and White 2 where shit names. I came up with Ebony and Ivory before they announced them as Kyouhei and Mei. The rival's name comes from the demonstration they did for the game where they named the rival after one of the producers as a joke of some sort. Will find the article and post it here about it.
EDIT: Here it is, sorta:
"Trivia
During the Pokémon Black 2 and White 2 playthrough on the April 15, 2012 episode of Pokémon Smash!, they chose the name "Hihihiroshi" for Hugh. The name was initially a backstage in-joke originating from when the Smash! cast was passing time by practicing singing Can You Name All the Pokémon? BW.[1] Following the Japanese naming conventions of the Klink family, it was determined that Hihihiroshi was the final evolved form of Hiroshi Yamamoto."

I do that with all the characters though, naming them the color of their game. Generation one the PC was Red, rival was Green (then with the remake, the female PC was Blue). Generation two has the male PC as Gold, female PC as Crystal, and the rival as Silver. Generation three male PC is Ruby, female is Sapphire, and I called the rival Emerald regardless of the fact that he was named Wally and I couldn't pick. Generation four male is Diamond, rival is Pearl, and female is Platinum. Generation five male is Black, female is White. Generation five v2 male is Ebony, female Ivory, rival is Hihi.
Pretty much I followed the name scheme of the manga characters, minus B2 and W2. Rival for Gen I is Green since the scans I read kept the names and didn't change them, even though we didn't get a green version and for U.S. he was officially named Blue.
