Lip gloss, bottled water, a pen, some cash - and pepper spray if you have night classes.

[S]Condoms. I mean, they even gave them out as part of our orientation kits when I got into university, so it must be true.[/S]
I'm actually not sure what you mean. I guess you need a notebook for writing notes, just like in high school? If your prof makes course slides available for download ahead of class, you could also bring a laptop and open them during the lecture. O_o
Unless you meant something else.. orz

1st Even if the professor tells you the book will be oh so helpful: Loan a copy preferrably, and check if you actually will use it. I bought a few that I never use.
2nd Depending on what sort of class you have (as in exam based grade only or homework based) you can actually ration your work. DO THAT. A lot of stuff that you pick up will not be needed.
3rd If you want to be a super good student, do all homework. It does help for exams and such...but the way to go is definitely steady work towards it.
4th Review and preview- it's work, but yeah.
5th If you are too lazy/cannot bring yourself to this and have exam based grades, cram study them when needed. That's what I do. Homework ones I do regularly as well, whenever I can. However I have to admit it's not bringing the best grades. I can however assure you that my grades when i did the ones above were better indeed.
So to take things: A small bag with water, pens, and paper. No books unless needed typically, but printouts you should have.

If you can, buy used books from other students. Unless the book you're using for that class is a brand new copy and students won't have it, you can easily save money instead of paying full price at the bookstore.

A good tip is to come into a class ready to learn like having a writing utensil and paper to take notes instead of coming to class to play Counter Strike or some MMORPG like I see people in some of my classes in the back doing.

Do your homework. Remember when you were in high school, and it wasn't *that* important? Yeah, now it could mean you'll fail a class if you don't do it. It helps you learn the material more than you think, so don't take it lightly. If there's one thing I regret about my first year, it was that I barely did any homework, skimmed across some classes by the skin of my teeth, and ended up failing Calculus because of that.
And for next year,
this site will be helpful. Choose your professors wisely.
