My finanacial aid ran out before I could get them all =(
So i pirated a few of them, saving me about 500$ (im taking 18 credit hours, and japanese class alone required 500$ in textbooks)
Problem is, now i learned I got nakama 1 version 1, and need the 2nd edition to do my homework, and i thought i was getting the right one. I should be able to get in and get the workbook tomorrow, but that means its ramen for the rest of the month, and i still get to deal with an outdated textbook (which im assuming is better than the outdated workbook, as the textbook shouldnt be that different between versions and isn't needed for assignments.
I hate school sometimes.
Textbooks totaling to over 1000$ should not be freaking legal.

Have you tried amazon and everything?

Spent most of my summer salary paying for books.

Checked amazon, same prices as school pretty much. Checking on an old student from the class that said at the beggining of the semester he might have his old textbook for sale, but the workbook is what i am mainly concerned about, as an old textbook can still be used, while a workbook is different and requires specific pages.
Ill get it all, it just annoys me. I feel like I am being punished for going above the 12 credit hours required for full-time.

Luckily at my university, we can rent the books for 25$ a book. And they aren't crappy either! One of my books this year was actually brand new, the others in wonderful condition too. However, you have to usually buy any work books, but regardless it saved me tons of money!

Since I barely have to pay tuition I just use my modest college fund to pay for my books.
Feels good.

How long can you rent a book with 25$?

Yeah try renting books like Okami said, to be honest, textbook companies are just trying to suck every single penny out of university students, every year there's new editions and what not. The prices are insane too for what you get, as in the book itself, there's a "textbook" that's not even a book, it's just paper with holes on the side and they expect you to buy a binder to put it in. ):
Renting books should be available through your bookstore or online.

Till the end of that semester. As long as you have the class that needs the book, you can rent it for that semester. Not sure how it works if you fail, but as long as you need the book for the class you can rent it. Even if you already rented it before :D

Renting books here shaves 10% or so off the price, but you can only rent for one semester...and you may need the book for like four.

Textbook prices are bullshit. Luckily there's piracy and if you can't pirate since the professors will want the book in class, you can always rent from Chegg and other sites online, they've got decent prices.
It really pisses me off when my school orders a "custom edition" made specifically for the school, so I absolutely have to buy that... Good luck in Japanese too. I'm taking it this semester and had to buy Nakama 1a and the workbook to decipher moonrunes for homework...

Custom editions pretty much limit the resell customer base to your school. :<

Im already ahead in the moonrunes department, cause I had started working on rtk before class had started and am already on 1000 or so, and doing good at a pace of 20 or so per day. Interestingly enough, the book i was using was on the textbooks list, so i guess im doing something right?
Anyway, i did rent my math textbook, it was only 80$ for a semester, and has doodles all over it.
I also had to rent an online ebook for 70$ for a library class, because its a special edition.
I managed to get my programming 1 and art books torrented at least, but then still had to pay for 200$ in japanese books, plus the 200$s in rentals, and then an added 300$+ for other classes that didnt have any books online i could find.

I feel your pain, my aid runs out every now and then too. That's why I work part time (about 35 hours) so I can supply everything else that aid won't cut in.
