What's the point of doing that to a desktop?

This is one of the best ideas ive seen in a while. Maybe nvidia or AMD could turn this whole setup into a actual portable gfx.

There'd be no market for it.

Plug in a monitor to this and you'd have a full size gaming computer. Note that the rack is actually a good bit bigger than it needs to be.

psh, who needs custom made computer housing cases when you could let it all hang out like the above picture?
Personally, if you are going to do all of this, at least try and get a nice case so that it's not all over for your cat or other pet to get it.
But perhaps that's me not wanting wires all over the bloody place and having it nice and contained.
If I had a bunch of loose wires, my cat will get to them and it will not be pretty if they aren't very thick. I've lost so many headphones from my cat chewing through them.

People who want better ventilation/airflow control, better wire management, pretty things, protection from the outside (less dust, pet issues), etc.

I was being sarcastic if you had read what I had said after that. Hard to convey tone over the internet.

Oh.
Well having an open case would actually be pretty convenient. As long as you keep the door closed in your computer room pets won't cause much of a problem... but it'd probably have airflow problems. I wouldn't know, never done it. The fact that it's open may actually make it easier.
It could have its benefits.
I mean really, for me, I'm too lazy to open the case, get on my knees and mess around with the parts a lot of the time, where with this I could just shut it down, literally pull out a part and put a new one in in only 15 seconds.

The case is too small to hold the parts and the person doesn't feel like buying a new case

The problem is that you can't have a reliable high-bandwidth link over such a long cable. Or at least, I believe that is why you haven't seen many, if any such products mass-marketed.
Thunderbolt (not thunderbird) links make this more feasible, and Sony actually has a super sexy ultrathin notebook that comes with a dock that contains a disc burner, utilizing this connection. Too bad Sony decided to use a pretty weaksauce GPU in their dock. Expect other manufacturers to eventually make better use of this, however.
