MagitekKefka's Guide to Cooking
I have just recently completed getting r9 cooking, and I have found that it is incredibly useful. This will be a guide on how to get cooking as fast as possible.
First off, here's a bit about cooking:
Advantages of Cooking
1. Stat increases for both combat and life skills when food is eaten. There are many foods that can give you a fair boost of hp, mp, sp, and other stats very cheaply. The duration of these boosts increases as you rank up cooking.
2. Hot Springs Monkeys. If you feed these monkeys certain dishes, they will give you many valuable and useful items, such as gems, leathers, potions, glowing statues, wood boards, and many others
3. Dex and int boost. Each rank adds int to your character and later ranks add dex, both of which increases your effectiveness in combat.
4. Very easy and not very costly to train.
5. Ingredients are cheap and easy to obtain, even for more advanced dishes
6. Doesn't add much cp, so it's easy to train when you get bored of training cp dependent skills
Disadvantages
1. The cooking meter is somewhat difficult to get right (if you're not using the overlay)
2. Time consuming for each individual recipe.
3. Tools are somewhat costly for beginners
How to get Cooking:
Talk to Glenis to obtain a book that will give you the skill upon advanced reading it. Alternatively, you can buy it from Krug or Alexina
Using Cooking
When you use the skill, you are confronted with a window with three boxes, three buttons, a menu, and a gauge. The boxes are where you drop the items to be cooked into. You select what kind of cooking you wish to do with the menu. When you press the buttons, one under each box, the meter fills some with the object above it. The objective of this minigame is to get the right percentage of each ingredient in the gauge. However while you are playing, the gauge oscillates a bit, creating a bit of uncertainty as to how much the gauge is actually full. This oscillation is reduced as you get more dexterity. Each different cooking option from the menu requires different equipment. They are as follows:
Mixing: Cooking Table and Cooking Knife
Baking: Cooking Pot and Ladle
Simmering: Cooking Pot and Ladle
Kneading: Cooking Table and Rolling Pin
Boiling: Cooking Pot and Ladle
Making Noodles: Cooking Table and Rolling Pin
Deep-frying: Cooking Pot and Ladle
Stirfrying: Cooking Pot and Ladle
Training the skill:
Novice Rank (Lots of buying)
1.Buy the book about baking from Aeira in Dunbarton and advanced read it (50% of the training)
2.Buy a cooking knife and table from either Walter in Dunbarton or Nora at the Tir Chonaill inn
3.Buy 5 cheese slices and 5 breads from Caitin in Tir
4.Mix the cheese and bread at 80% bread and 20% cheese to make 5 cheese breads (the final 50%)
Notes:
-This is your first taste of cooking, it gets slightly harder from here on out.
-All cooking tools can be bought through Walter and Nora
Rank F (Now comes the real cooking)
1.Buy or make a ladle(handicraft) and a cooking pot
2.Gather 20 eggs
3.Buy 20 salts
3.Make 20 fried eggs at 90% egg 10% salt(30%)[using baking]
5.Eat them all(10%)
6.Make 50 cheese breads. (10%)
7.Again, buy the book on simmering from Aeira and advanced read it (50%)
Notes:
-You need an oven or a campfire to use Baking.
Rank E (A fair amount of egg-gathering)
1.Buy 10 empty bottles
2.Buy a sickle and harvest corn at Emain Macha or Outside of Qilla Base Camp
3.Fill your bottles with water, simmer "steamed corn" using an oven , using 80% corn, 20% water
4. Repeat the whole thing and eat the corn until the simmering requirements have been filled(45%)
5.Make 10 fried eggs(5%)
6.Buy the book from Aeira as usual(50%)
Notes:
-Be sure to keeps the bottles, as you'll need to use them for almost all ranks of cooking
-Steamed corn gives surprisingly good stats for the low rank you can cook it at.
-Continent Warp resets every 18 minutes, you can use this to your advantage by using the well and fire in dunbarton and occasionally continent warping to refill on corn.
Rank D (Fun with Fry Batter)
1. Buy or make a rolling pin (handicraft)
2. Gather 20 eggs

Getting to Gordon's Secret Shop
Repeat these steps until there is a tab called "Skill Books" in Gordon's shop
1.Go to Eaven in Dunbarton and purchase as many Gift Rings as you can
2.Give them all to Gordon
3.Talk to him about "Private Story" and "Nearby Rumors" inbetween each one
4. If he says "It looks as if it would be better to end this conversation", end it and gift him three gift
rings without talking to him and then continue the normal cycle.
Notes:
-I certainly hope you kept the bottles as I told you to
-Keep as many fry batters as you can, you will need them later
-Gordon's friendliness with you decays over time, so the secret shop may close again before you finish rank cooking. You can avoid this by purchasing all of the needed books at once
Rank C (Halfway There: a Respite)
1. Read the book on noodle-making from Gordon's Secret Shop(50%)
2. Buy 20 Basil from Shena in the Emain Macha restaurant
3. Boil and drink 20 Basil Teas with 85% water and 15% basil (40%)
4. Knead 20 fry batters (10%)
Notes:

-Stay in the restaurant at Emain Macha, there is readily available water out on the dock and Shena sells basil cheaply
-Get ready for the hell ranks (A and B)
Rank B (Demonic Noodles)
1. Read the book on deep-frying from Gordon's Secret Shop(50%)
2. Harvest wheat (using a sickle) and turn it into flour at the windmil in Tir until you have twenty wheat flours (This is much harder than it seems, I ended up spending hours harvesting hundreds of wheat)

4. Boil and eat 50 Basil Teas (20%)
5. Make 50 Fry Batters (10%)

Rank 9 (Leisurely)
1. Do Shena's Part-Time Job (make 2 lemon juice with 60% Lemon 30% Berry and 10% Sugar each) to obtain a ticket which allows you to participate in the Cooking contest

Rank 8 (Coming to a Computer Near You in the Near Future)
More Cooking Stuff (Summaries and Whatnot)
Cooking Help:
-Brownie is an overlay tool which requires you to run in windowed mode. This overlay is EXTREMELY helpful when cooking. You can find the link to download it here: Print Page - Hotaru's Brownie Application
-As you may know, most ranks of cooking have an extra requirement to eat 20 foods of the next rank, which you can substitute for 10% of the requirement (No making 50 noodles anyone?) If you need this food, I can make it for you, just mail the ingredients to Magitrek on Ruairi and note me that you have done it.
Foods you should cook by rank:
Novice: Cheese bread
F: Fried Egg
E: Steamed Corn
D: Fry Batter
C: Basil Tea
B: Thin Noodles
A: Fried Shrimp
9: Fried Vegetables
Profit from Cooking
The main source of profit from cooking is hot spring monkeys. To maximize profits, make Vegetable soup, which is boiled with 52% Fried Vegetables, 38% Whipping Cream, and 10% pepper. To feed it to the monkeys, drag it from your inventory and click on the monkey. These monkeys reside in the hot springs in Zardine. You can get all the ingredients for Vegetable Soup at Caitin in Tir Chonaill. There are multiple levels of rewards from the hot spring monkeys and Vegetable soup gives you an item from the highest tier, "Loved Foods". To learn more about the hot spring Monkeys, visit Hot Springs - Mabinogi World Wiki
Another source of profit can be cooking dishes that are useful to other players for their stat boosts, such as mushroom consomne for and int boost and vales fire for help with refining (Credit to Magena)
And thus concludes my guide on cooking. Enjoy the Free gems and statues!
