I live in northern virginia, and typically people have the choice of either verizon or cox for their internet needs. Up here in pittsburgh where I currently attend school, I have a choice between comcast and verizon.
It's not a wide variety, but you do have somewhat of a choice. It's set up like that ON PURPOSE. Usually, infrastructure costs would be cost-forbidding that most companies would tend to stay out of each others jurisdiction, but the US government has subsidized it such that each area should have more than one provider so there is no true monopoly.
I'm from Virginia too, and here's my experiences.
Virginia Beach: Comcast or Verizon. Verizon's a relatively new player, and not available in many areas (the city extends miles inland), so for most people and the majority of the time, it was "Cox", "dialup", or "expensive-ass fios" (when they first rolled out, the minimum plan in my area was 5Mb/s down, whereas most consumers are happy with 1-3 and didn't want to pay the price).
Lexington: The only thing available where I lived was phone-bundled DSL. A few streets over the neighbors had cable (RR), but the service didn't extend to us (we were all outside the city limits, which isn't much for that place).

The point here that you're avoiding is that you can ONLY play mabinogi through nexon, therefore if you want to play mabinogi you must deal with nexon. It's like if you wanted an iphone, but thought apple was full of crap.
So if you don't like nexon, don't play mabinogi or any other nexon games. That's the only way you'll get them to change.
Yeah, I don't. I came back to post this thread since they actually responded to the ticket, well after I stopped playing.
