Simply put:
Particularly now, during the election year, we're seeing many scattered posts on the topic of politics. Politics in itself is a broad, very discussion-provoking topic, and it would make more sense to give the General Discussions forum a Politics subforum.

probably would help in isolating arguments. Going to that subforum you know you would be heading into some rather heating discussion. May as well expand it to cover all controversial subjects like religion and what not or we can stick with politics.

Heated discussion forum sounds nice. But politics is not for me. I would only succeed at (unintentionally) trolling.

And the chances of this subforum dying after the election is pretty close to 100%. Seriously, aside from the past few months, how often do you see an actual political discussion pop up that isn't something that's making fun of a stupid law that nobody knew existed? I know for a fact that there aren't that many outside of election season, and even the example of a thread making fun of a stupid law very rarely shows up.
So, if this idea for a subforum does pull through, it'll most likely end up like the debate section that people wanted (it died, twice), the cooking section that people practically demanded (that stopped being active only like a week after it was made, and after that, the only real activity in that section was a thread that should have belonged in Bean Rua than in the cooking section), as well as the Nexon game subsection (the whole game section should just be turned into a subforum for General Discussions, and open up all games, and not just a select few that have the prefix tags for them for discussion).
And yes, the possible "politics section" will become active again in the future. Approximately three and a half years into the future. Chances are, the site won't be around that long, considering that Chise is trying to change this site from a Mabinogi/Vindictus fansite to a general gaming community, and the only areas on this site that are seriously active are the Mabinogi section, and the general off topic section, who's to say how long the Mabinogi community ends up leaving once more random people from around the web start coming here and talking about CoD and Halo and Madden, and other random casual games.

That's a rather bleak and pessimistic view of these forums :(
If it came to that point, I think a good chunk of the rest of us who are decent would probably abandon ship.

Well, the people coming to this forum would at least have to have played Mabi/Vindictus at some point. So I doubt "random" people (*is a random person) would suddenly pop up and talk about FPS games.
So, anyone play Halo or CoD?

no, the cat would end being the only one who actively create political threads outside election seasons

Perhaps it is, but the fact that Chise does want this site to move from being mostly about Mabi/Vind, and some side discussions about other games, like it was originally, to being a site for people to just come and talk about video games, and push Mabi/Vind to being a minor part of the site shouldn't be a secret to anyone, and anyone that explores this site outside of the Mabi section most likely would have caught wind about that (and the part about how there's many members of this site that only visit one section, and are rather oblivious about anything outside of that section is another peeve of mine, but that's not part of this discussion).
And of course, once this site does make the change over, a member will tell one of their friends that didn't want anything to do with Mabi or Vind that the site changed, and that person will come over. Once the new person sees that MabiNation isn't a Mabi/Vind fansite anymore, then he'll probably tell his friends/clan members about this site, and use it as a way for organizing things outside of the game. And then those people will possibly do the same, and so on and so forth, ad nauseam. Of course, that's just one possible outcome.
Another outcome will be that once the announcement that this site won't be focusing on Mabi anymore, the people that only come to this site only for Mabi discussion will just leave, thus making the site considerably less active. And until those people I mentioned above that will come once one of their friends tell them it's no longer a fansite, practically the only discussions that will be going on will be in Bean Rua with the occasional new article, game review, etc.
And of course, there's also the "Yeah, I changed my mind, MabiNation will continue being a Mabinogi fansite" route, and it's possible that Chise has changed his mind since I quit being a staff member, but when I was a staff member, Chise was pretty adamant about changing the site over, so the only reason I can say that Chise would say that is if he ends up being to lazy to revamp the site, especially considering the amount of traffic the Mabi section gets compared to the rest of the site.

I think you think too highly of this site. It's not the gamer magnet you think it is.

And that's where you're wrong in thinking. You may have not been here when I quit being a staff member, or when I first just got up and quit the site altogether, but in both times, I have said that this site is going down the drain because of the community, and it really hasn't gotten much better since then either. All I'm doing is pointing out possible futures for this site from my observations of how this site's community is. You got the first outcome where the Mabi community is oblivious about the change, and the people that play more than just Mabinogi invite their friends over. The second outcome is where the Mabi community knows about it, and doesn't like the fact that they feel like they're not "important" enough to have their own section anymore, and they leave, making the site dead until more people that play other games show up. And the third is where the site doesn't change, and nothing happens. That's all I'm saying.

Didn't read any walls of text but in short there's no point.
We had a section perfect for that called "The Library" and no one used it, it averaged 1 or 2 threads per month.
Then people asked for a cooking section, and as predicted it's pretty dead now and will probably get removed by the end of this year.
I'm actually thinking of having less forums rather than adding, I notice many of them are not being used very much.

You're much smarter than me. Because I did read the walls of text, later realizing they were only speculations of what could happen. I assume "The Library" was removed? I wouldn't want the cooking section to go, so I think I'll make an attempt to revive it... Everyone eats food y'know.

I was going to mention this
along with what Arsik said, because once the election is over, it'd be dead for another 4 years

There is one person. Who will keep it alive?
