What is your opinion on Affirmative Action?
The idea that it's somehow compensation for what happened 150 years ago is crap. It's simply a means of gaining an advantage at the expense of others, being whites.

What is what who what?
Explanation please.

Racial equality. Compensating the minorities through whatever means such as government funding and whatnot, right?

I can understand if this occurs for education, but not for government jobs and the like.

You mean when a black person demands compensation from the government due to his ancestors being enslaved by whites?
Yeah... Living off your ancestor's work can be a sign of laziness.

I can't really tell if you're serious or not, but that's not what affirmative action is, anyways. It's introducing quotas to have XX% of your student population or workforce be minority, female, homosexual, or whatever else you want. I think it's reaching the point where it's no longer necessary for affirmative action (not quite there yet, but rapidly approaching that point). But I have serious doubts in my mind that people [s]like Reverend Jackson[/s] will ever admit that affirmative action is no longer needed, and will fight against taking it away just because it benefits them as an individual.

No, that's reparations, and that's more against the family that owned the person's ancestors. Affirmative action is basically; You have two guys, with identical credentials, apply for a job/college/something with a limited number of openings. However, one guy is African American and the other is Caucasian. With affirmative action, the black guy will get the spot, because of what white people did 150+ years ago. But if you chose the white guy over the black guy, and the manager is white, then it's racist, even though affirmative action in it's own right is racist.

Hey it is one of the few times where being a minority gets you somewhere. Usually it would be if a white guy and a black guy are going for the same job, and the black guy had more credentials than the white guy. First pick would have went to the white guy, instead of the one with more credentials.

Thanks. I had a wrong definition in mind. :fail2: In that case, I can't provide an opinion since I don't too much about it.

Quote from Wikipedia:
Affirmative action refers to policies that take factors including "race, color, religion, sex or national origin" into consideration in order to benefit an underrepresented group, usually as a means to counter the effects of a history of discrimination.
Affirmative Action. I feel that is can be helpful when used in a time frame that's short from the incident when this "history" happened. Take for example some citizen of a country they have just been through a genocide because of the country's nationality, they want to get a job and fast to assist their family just covering from this genocide. I wouldn't mind help them out to get a job.
As this event becomes older and older, of course people will feel that they should feel less inclined to help those citizen because they had plenty of time to help themselves. This seems to reach a threshold where it's just forgotten and everyone doesn't feel the needed to place Affirmative Action when confronting those type of people.
Off course a big factor to what makes people to decide to use Affirmative Action is the time of the incident where people feel that by a certain time, those people should be fine on there own just like I said. I feel that something as long as how old when people of the "black race" should not be given any Affirmative Action since that's the most recent time in history where I can remember where the whole/majority of the world/population decided to discriminate against a whole group of people ended because well... look at society, we're over it.
In between right now and that time... I might feel like I will use Affirmative Action.
Oh yeah, people trying to live off of their ancestor's sufferings 150 years ago really seem to know the relationship between how their ancestors' feels and their wallet size...

I think it's retarded.
Having a quota for hiring X number of people from whatever demographic is just as discriminatory as telling said demographic they won't be hired because of whatever characteristic they have.
I'm of the same opinion for for modifying things to be more "ethnically diverse". For example, making Manus into a black guy. Or making sure there's a black guy, asian and hispanic person, along with 1 female in group photos for advertisements.
The fact that people think of these things and make so much effort to try not to be discriminating, just makes me realize how much of a problem it still is. To get rid of discrimination you need to get rid of all notions of it, not force change to try and make the groups being discriminated against feel better.
True diversity is when no one even thinks of this stuff. Thinking of it too hard doesn't lead anywhere constructive.

We have similar thoughts.
Slightly Off topic (or maybe not): Colleges try to keep a racial quota that mirrors the distribution of people in America, so each race has its own standards. Not to be racist here, but it's a lot easier to get in if you're Hispanic or African-american.

Really don't like these diversity programs in education systems.
These programs discriminate against anyone who is white.
Even people who come from Europe (white, catholic) with worse opportunities do not get any scholarships.
These programs are also letting less capable people become our doctors or lawyers.
I want a doctor who beat out the rest of the competition and rose to the top.
The biggest reason I hate this program is because it also denies benefits to Asians.
My counselor told us that since we are so academically successful and that we are the "model minority" we are treated like whites.
I grew up in a two bedroom apartment and my parents did not even own a car, I didn't have amazing opportunities.
I worked hard to get into a magnet program, but since I did so well I have to work even harder?
This isn't even about who white people hurt in the past, it's just helping those who are not working as hard.
I know that many families have children that have to drop out of school to work but those families should get financial aid and more school funding.
With these programs even people who grew up in mansions can flash their race card and get the spot they wanted.

IMO, race and wealth shouldn't even be a factor in selection. The amount of opportunity you had might differentiate work ethic, so it might be applicable.
^Education ignores opportunities and focuses on race. >_<
