We found it while we were scavenging for canned goods in the ruins.
"Daddy, what is this?" My son held in his hands a crumpled election poster. "Where did you find this?" I asked."It was in the ash… what does it mean?"
"In the old days, people used to choose a president, a…" I struggled to describe to him the old ways, knowing that it would be completely alien to him. "Someone to lead the country." I said, resignedly.
Who was R-Ron P-", he started. "Ron Paul, I interjected. "He was a man who wanted to save us. But we wouldn't let him."
"Daddy... why are you crying?" he asked me. He was so innocent, despite it all. "No reason". I choked back the tears and crumpled up the flyer. I left it on the ground. Better to forget, I told myself.
"Daddy, I'm hungry"
"I know."
I can be overdramatic about shit that's never going to happen too! Watch!
We found it while we were looking around an abandoned house for supplies.
"Daddy, what's this?" My daughter held out an old Walking Dead DVD. "Where did you find this?" I asked. "It was in that cabinet over there, what is it?" She replied in a frail little voice.
"Back when I was your age, people used to create things called movies to entertain all the people in the world. Most movies were fiction, make believe things that no one ever thought would happen... Unfortunately that one ended up being true." I struggled to remember the past, when nothing more exciting then a storm ever happened to us, when we would spend hours having marathons of zombie movies and talking about what we would do if it happened.
"Daddy, why are you crying?" She asked me. She couldn't possibly understand. "there were many of us who, despite it only being make believe, thought that one day something like this would really happen, so we prepared for it and told others that they should prepare too... That's the only reason you and I are here.. But others.. They wouldn't listen to us. They laughed at us." I raised my hand gun and pointed it at my daughter, carefully taking aim and firing a shot right between the eyes of a zombie that was sneaking up behind her.
"That's why you should always listen to Daddy. He knows the score."
