Microsoft has confirmed it will retire its Windows Live Messenger service in favor of Skype. The Verge exclusively revealed Microsoft's plans earlier this week, but the company has since revealed it will start to discontinue Windows Live Messenger in early 2013. Microsoft will integrate over 100 million Messenger users to Skype as part of the discontinuation. "We will retire Messenger in all countries worldwide in the first quarter of 2013 (with the exception of mainland China where Messenger will continue to be available)," says Skype's Tony Bates.
Microsoft is encouraging users to download the latest version of Skype that supports Microsoft accounts, where users can integrate Skype and Messenger accounts into a single Microsoft account. Skype says it will assist users over the coming months to smoothly transition over from Windows Live Messenger.
R.I.P. Instant messages.

I probably wouldn't care.
But Skype eats up more RAM than any messaging service I've ever used, and has much less customization. Also, it has terrible support for add-ons. In fact, I think WLM text chat is better than Skype text chat in every way but group chats.
So I do care. This is incredibly frustrating as WLM is my prioritized IM service.

My work uses skype as it's main channel of communication so I'm all right with this as I'm on Skype 24/7 so that if I am needed for something they can get a hold of me. It'll be nice to not have to login to wlm when I want to chat with say Kenero and can communicate with her over Skype.
Now if only Microsoft would wise up and drop Internet Explorer and adopt Chrome instead

I don't mind all that much. Some people have ugly customization options. lol ;; *runs*
That and...I message like 2 people on Messenger at this point.

Sigh. Even if I didn't use it that often, MSN Messenger will always have a special place in my heart.

My MSN account is bugged to hell because of all the 1000+ BRs who added me. :| So I've been kinda retiring that account in favour of Skype, anyway.

I've been using it for ages. *_*

Yeah, I started using it after everyone stopped using the Yahoo messenger and began to use MSN. I've been using it ever since xD; It's a good thing I already have all the friends I talk to added on Skype though. However, I haven't been using Skype because my computer is old as hell and doesn't have a lot of RAM, which Skype eats up more than MSN.

I haven't logged on MSN in ages, I hate that thing.
I'm also hoping google vastly improves google chat so I can quit using skype.
